excellent
Zurich
+ beautifully landscaped, behavior friendly, often multi-species, and frequently groundbreaking enclosures; very good education
- rel. few mid to small sized exhibits and rel. limited number of species; masterplan still in the works leading to zoo-grounds somewhat lacking coherence;
San Diego
+ large number of species; some excellently designed exhibits; nice park setting
- somewhat infantilized and "disneyfied" education and presentation of animals; confusing pathways; relatively few truly naturalistic exhibits - many decent but otherwise 'standard' exhibits
Vienna
+ very compact & diverse zoo; successful modern & innovative zoo design in historic setting; very high minimal standard of enclosures
- very few truly outstanding exhibits

very good
Prague
+ large zoo-grounds in a park setting; large number of species; mostly spacious & natural, 'green' exhibits
- exhibits are mostly functional but not naturalistic
Singapore
+ beautifully landscaped, naturalistic enclosures; compact zoo-grounds in a beautiful park setting; innovative exhibit designs
- many enclosures too small and/or overpopulated

good
Sydney Taronga
+ breathtaking setting atop Sydney bay; good education
- enclosures often (too) small
Edinburgh
+ very good education; natural & behavior-friendly enclosures; interesting selection of animals
- enclosures often functional but aesthetically underwhelming
Zoo Berlin
+ '20th century zoo design' perhaps at its best; extremely large number of species; pleasing and compact park setting
- outdated '20th century zoo design' in the 21st century; enclosures too small and lacking enrichment; hardly any attempts at naturalistic exhibit design; stamp collection

Brain freeze; as far as I know there's just the one in Columbus. And as a native Michigander and graduate of the U. of Michigan (law school) I hate having to give any accolade to anything in Ohio, but it's a really fine zoo.

I'd add another Ohio zoo, Toledo. It's perhaps not as comprehensive as some others but a model of what you can do in a fairly limited area.

Henry Doorly Zoo
Minnesota Zoo
San Diego Zoo & Wildlife Park
