As a ZooChatter who loves ungulates as much as I love elephant shrews; naturally, it seemed that a thread like this would come around at some point. Sure, it’s been some time since I last made a similar thread. But after spreading the news about the birth of Zoo Miami’s newest giant eland. I felt very inspired to ask this simple question of what your top five species of antelope are, that is all; and to start things off, here’s my answer for reference:

1. Bongo
2. Giant Eland
3. Jackson’s Hartebeest
4. Nilgai
5. Lesser Kudu

Honorable Mention/s:*
1. Pronghorn - (not a true antelope I know)
2. Blackbuck
3. Gerenuk
4. Klipspringer
5. Addax

(*means that this will be subject to change)

This was a difficult decision with me being a lover of ungulates but I managed to narrow it down to these:

1) Hirola
2) Giant sable antelope
3) Giant eland
4) Saiga
5) Arabian oryx

1) Greater Kudu
2) Impala
3) Saiga
4) Waterbuck
5) Four Horned antelope

honorable mentions:
1) Likewise as well on the pronghorn
2) Blackbuck
3) Nilgai
4) Mongolian Gazelle
5) Chiru aka Tibetan antelope
6) Wildebeest
7) Red Flanked Duiker
8) Royal antelope

This is a great question, and quite tough as I love antelopes. I think I'll go with the following:
  1. Blackbuck
  2. Dama Gazelle
  3. Black Wildebeest
  4. Roan Antelope
  5. Saiga
Dama, great choice. I may have to swap one of my 5 for them, they are great animals.

Hello.
1. Oryx gazella
2. Oryx leucoryx
3. Hippotragus niger
4. Kobus kob (leucotis)
5. Damaliscus pygargus

Honorable mentions:
- Alcelaphus buselaphus
- Beatragus hunteri
- Boselaphus tragocamelus
- Connochaetes gnou
- Kobus megaceros
- Oryx beisa (callotis)
- Tragelaphus eurycerus
- Tragelaphus spekii
- Tragelaphus strepsiceros

I was going to attempt this but even with restricting it to only species I've seen, I couldn't tell you my five favorite Antilopinae :) I really love nilgai, though, and still get as excited to see them as if they were rare.

Even restricting my list to only species I've seen, I still found it extremely difficult to choose only five antelope species but eventually selected the following:-
  • zebra duiker
  • Jentink's duiker
  • saiga
  • royal antelope
  • white-tailed gnu (black wildebeest)
The following species all came extremely close to making my top five:-
  • gerenuk
  • giant eland
  • Cape hartebeest
  • Nile lechwe
  • bushbuck
  • four-horned antelope

In no particular order:
Speke's Gazelle
Soemmerring's Gazelle
Roan Antelope
Kirk's Dik-Dik
Klipspringer
Red-Flanked Duiker

I know, I cheated and included six.

I'd be curious to hear what Zoo Chat's resident ungulate expert, @Kudu21 has as an answer to this question.
