Your top 5 favorite Antelopes

This is a great question and a hard one too because I love just about all of them. I make it easier on me, I'm sticking with the antelope species found in U.S. zoos.

1) Nyala
2) Slender-horned Gazelle
3) Sitatunga
4) Gerenuk
5) Soemmerring's Gazelle

Honorable Mention:
6) Lesser Kudu
7) Speke's Gazelle
8) Bontebok
9) Addra Gazelle
10) Red-flanked Duiker
11) Addax

This was harder than I thought because I have more favorites!

Since so many of us have already made our assortment of favorites after starting this thread nearly five months ago. I figured that now was a good time to combine each other’s favorites by the numbers, and to see which antelope is the most beloved among the ZooChat community.

Now among the 57+ species that were mentioned so far; the one that the majority seems to favor is the beautiful Bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus ssp.), with 28 of us ZooChatters (myself included) agreeing that this either their number one, or perhaps, one of their favorite species of antelope.

Which is no surprise, as the bongo is quite literally a living work of art. With both the males and females each bearing the most attention-grabbing color scheme among the Tragelaphine antelopes. At the same time, however, they’re also one of the most endangered members of their genus; but I’m glad that their captive presence is a prevalent one with dozens being present across the world in various zoos, wildlife parks, reintroduction sites, and beyond:

As a ZooChatter who loves ungulates as much as I love elephant shrews; naturally, it seemed that a thread like this would come around at some point. Sure, it’s been some time since I last made a similar thread. But after spreading the news about the birth of Zoo Miami’s newest giant eland. I felt very inspired to ask this simple question of what your top five species of antelope are, that is all; and to start things off, here’s my answer for reference:

1. Bongo
2. Giant Eland
3. Jackson’s Hartebeest
4. Nilgai
5. Lesser Kudu

Honorable Mention/s:*
1. Pronghorn - (not a true antelope I know)
2. Blackbuck
3. Gerenuk
4. Klipspringer
5. Addax

(*means that this will be subject to change)

Several months after my initial list that kicked off this very thread; I have made some notable changes in regards of my ranking. These days, in place of the Lesser Kudu, the Springbok is now my new fifth-favorite antelope; and while I still think the kudu is a beautiful species, it is no longer ranked as a personal top five.

Otherwise, the Gerenuk has downgraded to the Addax’s place in the honorable mentions category, with the Lowland Nyala taking over its former position.

Don't know how I missed this thread! Antelope are my all-time favorite group of animals!! #1 should come as no surprise now I'll have to figure out 2-5...

Here goes:

1. Giant Eland
2. Mountain Nyala (I don't think I've seen this on the thread so far!)
3. Hirola
4. Chiru
5. Zebra Duiker

Honorable mentions:
1. Jentink's Duiker (almost got the 5th spot!)
2. Saiga
3. Beira
4. Roan
5. Gemsbok
6. Nile Lechwe
7. Dibatag
8. Sitatunga
9. Four-horned Antelope
10. Blackbuck

I have seen all of these except Chiru (high on my wishlist obviously), Beira, and Dibatag.

Oooo happy to report I have now seen Beira and Dibatag, which leaves only Chiru that I need to see! I can say the same from everyone else's lists too, although some included the quasi-antelope Saola (seemingly impossible to see unfortunately), and a couple subspecies I need to see like Giant Sable Antelope.
