Your Top Five Marine Mammals

Like every response to a Top-Five thread, my choices will always be subjective to change. For the time being, here is my (current) list of favorites.
  1. Orca (Killer Whale)
  2. West Indian Manatee
  3. Commerson’s Dolphin
  4. Steller’s Sea Lion
  5. Pacific White-Sided Dolphin (the only species on this list I’ve exclusively seen in the wild)

1. Walrus
2. Killer whale
3. Bottlenose dolphin
4. Polar bear
5. Steller's sea lion

I don't think this is quite an exact list beyond the first two, but it's close enough

Also considering the context of the forum my list was influenced by my fondness in zoological collections instead of just my general favorite marine mammals, but in a way it still works haha

I definitely feel that California sea lions deserve a place on this list, possibly replacing polar bears if we're talking just my personal favorites, but I did make an effort at some sort of variety

My current favorites in no particular order:
  1. Amazon River Dolphin
  2. Beluga
  3. Hawaiian Monk Seal (seen in wild)
  4. Sea Otter (possibly seen in wild, seen in captivity)
  5. West Indian Manatee

1. Orca
2. Bottlenose Dolphin
3. Leopard Seal
4. Blue Whale
5. West Indian Manatee

My list was rather straight forward to put together.

Top two were quite easy. Orcas are an obvious favourite of mine. Have equally always loved Bottlenose Dolphins in a similar manner.

Leopard Seals are also my favourite seal species; I remember seeing one at Taronga during my childhood. Blue Whales are spectacular, and definitely deserved a place on my list.

Five was a debate between three species. I ultimately went with the Manatees. Swimming with them in the wild is absolutely on my bucket list. I was choosing between them, Polar Bears, and Narwhals. Was quite close to choosing Narwhals - love their uniqueness as a species and would probably be my honorable mention here!

1. Steller's Sea Lion
2. Orca
3. Southern Elephant Seal
4. North Atlantic Right Whale
5. Mediterranean Monk Seal

A more difficult list for me than I thought. Only ones I was certain about were the Orcas and the Right Whales - orcas have long been my favorite cetacean and when it comes down to other whale species, I gotta go with the right whales.

Steller's sea lions are very captivating to me, they have lots of personality and I love their inhabitance of Pacific Northwest habitats. Southern elephant seals were my favorite seal as a kid because of how impressive their fighting abilities are, and Mediterranean monk seals hold a special place in my heart because of their conservation symbolism and they are what inspired me to start making speculative zoos.

The Right Whale and Bowhead…are probably my favorite large whales for sure.

Marine mammals are some of my favorite of all animals, with a surprising amount of diversity. Despite that it was surprisingly easy to come up with five that stick out to me.

1) Sperm Whale
2) Walrus
3) Dugong
4) Gray Whale
5) Polar Bear

1. Polar bear
2. Harbor seal
3. North American river otter
4. California sea lion
5. Orca

Pretty basic list of mostly North American species but I have a soft spot for them because I have worked with most of them, excluding killer whales. In the future I really want to see wild killer whales since I've never seen them before

1. North Atlantic Right Whale
2. Harbour Seal
3. Beluga Whale
4. Pygmy Killer Whale
5. Blue Whale

Can you tell I love whales :p Pretty basic but they're hard to beat for me

1. Southern Right Whale Dolphin (Lissodelphis peronii)
2. Arnoux's Beaked Whale (Berardius arnuxii)
3. Chinstrap Penguin (Pygoscelis antarcticus)
4. Spectacled Porpoise (Phocoena dioptrica)
5. Beluga (Huso huso)
