Your zoo related highlight of 2012

My 2012 Highlight zoo wise would have to be Chester Zoo's baby boom this year:

- including watching the Cheetah Cubs grow up, after going through so much trauma with the lil' spots family it is great to know that they will be moving on to continue their valuable work in the breeding program.

I laugh in the face of 10 word/letter rules :)

News:

- the last chimps leaving the green mile at twycross. On with the bulldozers now please.

Highlights:
- catching up with my favourite gibbon Ethan at the paradise wildlife park, and him remembering me and being delighted to see me.
- the wonderful warm reception from all the staff at the Birmingham Nature Centre when I did a keeper day there this year. Made it very special.
- all my chimp/orang encounters, feel very privileged to be recognised by such wonderful creatures.

Three people, myself included, have now voted this as their best news.:)

Just a thought for the prize for the U.K. zoo challenge 2013, the winner has the privilege of driving the bulldozer into the green mile and demolishes the bloody lot, good riddance, and a happy new year to all, especially to the recently relocated Twycross chimps:)

Bulwagi ''talked'' to me one day while it was just him and me. He was in the boma yard and He started vocalizing.

Good idea but I would hope perhaps they would do something with that area before another twelve months have elapsed though.

1) Private play and photo session with two (different morph) jaguar cubs at Cat Haven. Photos attached.

2) Clouded leopard cubs at Nashville Zoo.

3) Mule deer on Bright Angel trail - photographed with the Grand Canyon in the background.

I think anyone that knows me will know my highlight of the year, was the evening that I had it confirmed that the Director had gone from Twycross!

But animal related highlight will have to be the moment that Javan Rhino got to see the Echidna at Paignton!

Regarding your first highlight, I had similar thoughts, although unlike yourself I am too shy, retiring and timid to post a similar comment.

Post the Mule Deer photo.

Here you go. Since the deer is too small in the overall photo to see clearly in a thumbnail, I cropped it also so you can see where it is.

I have not printed it yet (even though I work at a pro photo lab), but it is meant to be printed large for full effect. I have a high res full frame camera and I tweaked and resized it in Photoshop (and did a test print of a small section to check resolution). It is sized 34x50 inches and the test shows it is still sharp and unpixelated at that size.

I think more than a few people with links to Twycross, will have had the same thought! But those people that know me well will know its not often that I sit on a fence on a subject!

Pity other people who could have changed things sooner , didn't sit on the fence for so long, then perhaps the zoo would not have been in such a bad state that it has found itself in.

Nice Grand Canyon shot AD! Shame the deer wasn't looking at you.

My zoo highlight was returning to Hawaii after 20 years and seeing the Honolulu Zoo (Golden White-eyes, Birds-of-Paradise, Mariana Fruit Doves, Hawaiian Crow and Hawaiian Owl), Waikiki Aquarium and Sea Life Park (Hawaiian Monk Seals at both), and Hanauma Bay.

You can probably guess my non-zoo highlight(s)...

:p

I actually kind of like it this way, because it is as if she is looking into the canyon and enjoying the view.

I see your point, maybe it's just me. Actually, for me, I think a better shot would be a profile of it grazing. But that's just me.

For me it was my visit to Bangkok's main zoo, the Dusit Zoo.
A great zoo which allowed me to see some lovely species for the first time, with Fea's barking deer, Sumatran serow, Phyre's leaf monkey, smooth-coated otter, hog bager, small Indian civet, small-toothed palm civet, Asian brush-tailed porcupine, lesser adjutant and quite a few reptiles being the most important ones.
