By prepearing my trip to Yucatan - Mexico - I came across the Yucatan jay, a species I've never seen alive.
By checking the International Zooyear Book I found a British collection which had at least a pair because during 1985 a breeding attemp was made at "Chard" which resulted in the hatching of 3 chicks, none of which was raised succesfully.
Does anyone know more about the birds at Chard - number kept, longivity, more ( succesfull ) breeding-attemps, manner how they were kept ( inside - outside, alone or with other species ) and so on. Is there ever anything published about this breeding-attemp ?
Also I would be intrested to know if the species is kept ( and/or bred ) at other collections ?
Any help would be greatly appriciated !

The First Breeding Records for Birds Reared to Independance Under Controlled Conditions in the United Kingdom by David Coles lists a breeding for this species at Rode Tropcail Bird Gardens in 1982.

The reference is Foreign Birds Magazine 1983 page 28.

This breeding is not listed in the International Zoo Yearbook, but a breeding at Chard is. In 1982 2 were hatched but not reared, (International Zoo Yearbook volume 24/25, page 505)

Yucatan Jays..

'Chard' would be Cricket St Thomas Wlidlife Park, now closed

Thanks carlos77, I was already hoping for seeing at least some in the wild !
What about other wild birds, how are my changes to see - for example - hummingbirds, trogons, motmot, curassows and/or Parrots ? Are these common in Yucatan ?

In Tropical mexico, wherever there are flowers and sun there will be hummingbirds.Conures are common in many large parks and archeological sites. The trogons, motmot, currassows and larger parrots can be seen at Rio Lagartos or Sian Kan reserves. Macaws and jaibiru are very very difficult, maybe only off limit areas of sian kan.

Being back in the cold Netherlands and can say that I've seen a lot of birds in tropical Mexico ! First about the Yucatan jays : I've seen them both in the wild - at several places and a captive one in the large free-flight aviary at Merida Zoo.
Because we had quite a lot of days with rain and some realy stormy days the number of species seen was smaller has hoped but even so some nice sightings of hummingbirds, trogons and Parrots. Motmot, currassows and macaws only seen in captivity but my wife and I were so impressed by the beauty of Mexico that we surely will return one day...
