Yorkshire Wildlife Park YWP Project Polar

Well the 2 polar bears are getting on great in Project polar.

They weren't planning on putting Pixel in with Victor so soon, but as soon as he arrived Victor was desperate to meet him and was starting to pine and wouldn't leave the housing block. So they let pixel into the enclosure first to let him explore, then let Victor in. Pixel understandably is apprehensive of Victors 500kg frame, but day by day they are getting closer and were down to less than 20 feet yesterday. It is keeping Victor more active as he tries to meet up with his grandson. Pixel likes to throw dustbin lids and brush handles around, and sometimes off the island that Victor,as far as I know, has never managed to drag his considerable frame onto.

Update on 3rd enclosure, well its nearly done. Lots and lots of heathers have been planted, along with quite a few pine trees. The den/cave is finished. Fencing is just about finished.Hopefully there are some boulders still to go in,and the keepers have asked for some dead trees and tree stumps to be put in so they can put food up higher to show the size and reach of the bears.

Whilst I'm all for rescuing animals from appalling conditions, it does rather seem YWP should ask the collection in question before going to the media.

I doubt a direct approach would have resulted in anything but a rebuttal and the same 'foreign interference' attitude. Its possible the weight of publicity might help force the issue, at least over time, but often the greater pressure just makes the institution concerned even more determined not to part with the animal.

Very true. However, media pressure could have been brought to bear after diplomatic efforts failed. That would have begun the debate on a less confrontational footing, which seems to me the best of both worlds.

How do we know that a direct approach wasn't already made? I always take very little notice of what is published in the media and I would suggest that Chinese media is even less reliable.

Reports by several news outlets that the aquarium had not been contacted. Everyone takes notice of what's published in the media.

Whichever way, its resulted, like the Mexican(?) bear, with the expected refusal to comply. Whether that changes over time remains to be seen, I rather doubt it.

Chinese mall aquarium rejects UK wildlife park's offer to give 'world's saddest polar bear' a new home: Shanghaiist

I was reading through a bunch of news reports yesterday trying to figure out what was going on.

Initially it was because kiang's post said "The park has made an offer to rehome PIZZA..." when the link itself never mentioned that (in fact it specifically said "Neither the Grandview Centre nor the Yorkshire Wildlife Park would comment") and so I thought it was in error. But all the other reports I found did say that Yorkshire was offering the bear a new home and Animals Asia was confident everything was taken care of.

I only came across one news item which said something along the lines of "the aquarium says it has not received any offer from Yorkshire" which suggested something odd was going on.

So, it is pretty much just like the Mexico situation. Except I gather the Mexican polar bear was doing fine just where it was, whereas I think the Chinese bear definitely needs to be "rescued". That aside, as already said (in both cases), if Yorkshire comes out "on the attack", as it were, against a place which legally owns an animal and has no reason or desire to give it up, then of course it's not going to work out.

I very much suspect this is yet another case of YWP getting themselves a nice bit of free Publicity,by making themselves look like the good guys, would not be the first time any one remember a Giraffe!!
