Zion Wildlife Gardens Zion re-opens with new name, Kingdom Of Zion

As a matter of interest, what system of zoo licensing do you have in New Zealand? Who inspects collections for safety, welfare, etc?

Chlidonais will know for sure but the local and regional council's would be my guess, with import/export oversight from MAF.

MAF license zoos and zoo operators.

The zoos have to comply with the MAF STANDARD 154.03.04 Containment facilities for zoo animals which can be found on the MAF site - http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/border/transitional-facilities/animals/154-03-04.htm

You will find that the kingdom breaches several of those standards at the moment..

No one regularly monitors welfare issues - this is done on a response to complaint basis only. MAF have taken ownership of Zion so the SPCA would not get involved. MAF has a team of inspectors - how good they are nowadays is anyone's guess.

Absolutely. It's all about the ownership of a particular complaint. Whoever receives the complaint then owns it. Deep joy for the MAF guys...

Am I missing something? There are only 36 big cats at the park. There was 49.Losses-Abu Sita Shia Silas Samson Thats 44 am i going mad!?

Three female white tigers are on loan to Pouakai Zoo, Kala, Anita & Azra.

Kala, Azra, and Anila were transferred to Pouakai Zoo at the end of 2009.

There were never 49 cats. As I recall the most they had was around 42.

Samson was put down due to cancer at around age 21

Khan was euthanased due to possible congenital issues

A tiger cub died when allegedly it was crushed by Shikana

Shia died of reported natural causes in 2009

Sita was killed by Jahdu during an attempted mating during 2010.

Silas died on 9 March. 2012 He was found dead in his enclosure. He was almost 14 years old at the time of death.

Hope that helps.:)

Hmmm. Wonder how long it is before a new thread is started, "Zion closes again" as the Kingdom of Ian splutters once and then goes out altogether?

Very acerbic Felix! Nice play on words, a triple-entendre.. I didn't see that one coming!

In any event, I believe that the great and the good will learn that a buck in the hand is worth at least two in the Busch, independent of whether a krait lurks therein. Nasty critters, gusset snakes.

So prepare to herald the end of the Kingdom of z'Ian - 'tis only a matter of time now.

And if they float it on the open market, methinks that young Busch will not reap the rewards of young Zuckerburg.

"Anyone want to buy shares in Stevenson's Emporium? Step right up now, ladies and gentlemen - cash doors are open, first customer please"... Hello? Helllooo...? Anyone there?

Does monopoly money count? I have millions....!

They have said that they won't be breeding white tigers anymore.
Also, Mandla the black leopard (that a former keeper said was completely wild and had never been worked with hands-on) was actually raised as a house cat (in the UK, I think).
