would have thought a keeper would have knowin that a so there gonna phase the white tigers out or import but not breed and are they still going to be aventuly breeding lions and orange tigers

They will possibly breed more white lions. They are unable to breed anymore orange tigers without using a white tiger or importing more. Without using Shakira, they could no longer breed their tawny lions as the wild pride are all related.
 
Is someone suggesting that inbreeding is a barrier to the continuance of team Busch's 'breeding program'? Good grief.

Which cats are inbred? It is well-known publicly that the wild pride are all related, so I don't think they would breed them. I was told that they will no longer breeding white tigers because of the controversy around the genetics or something.
 
Narnia, Aslan and Savannah are also from Shania and Samson who were closely related. They were both born at Paradise Valley Springs and they are not so called Barbary Lions none of the cats are. Shikira is 100% African Lion. She had three cubs Abdullah, Tshaka and Cleo. Cleo is very small so isn't really suitable. Shikira was put in with Zion back in early June of 2010. As far as I know they are still together. None of these cats are in an SSP programme so have no conservation value as such. Mandla was sent from Heythrop Zoo to Zion.

Maybe my next animal family tree should be of Paradise Valley Springs... :)

But she is quite correct. And as far as white lions are concerned, the picture is all the more dismal. If anyone thinks I am wrong, why not ask KoZ to provide a 'family tree'? I'm not on your case Driftaguy but I am also very aware on the problems that surround anything to do with the results of procreation that involve Zion cats.

the Paradise Valley lions are all descended from circus lions (very generic animals) so I'm not sure how far back you could actually trace them.

I remember the old story when working as a cop in the backwaters of Essex. A 'tec knocks on the door of an address in deepest Harwich and this guy answers. The 'tec says, "Who lives here mate?" The guys says, "Hmmm, let me see. There's me, my mum, my sister, my partner and my daughter. Just the two of us then."

Only Shania (originally named Scarlett at PVSWP) was born at PVSWP - Samson was not - he (as far as I know) was circus born. :)
 
yep Sampsonw as circus born in 1988 i think they could potentuly breed Abdulah and Tshaka with Narnia and Savanah and then breed Cleo with Aslana nd keep zion and shikira togeather and put the wild pride back togeather also with the white lions mayby they might breed Moya and Mara with Gandor possible

Im very nosey lol when I use to visit the park I asked the keeprs there ant they told me and also from watching the dvds :)
 
No lion breeding program undertaken by Zion is going to get much credibility from the Zoo brigade.
Lions might be a dwindling species in the wild, but mongrel bred captive lions certainly are not.
 
Old Craig is still visiting Africa filming big cats and promising great prosepcts for his fims in the future.
He is getting to be one of the better known Kiwis amongst wild animal keepers and breeders in SA.
