Could anybody present us the current huge project under construction at Sosto zoo called Zöld Piramis?

What species, how will the individual exhibits be constructed etc.?
 
I think the Green Pyramid is architectural ready... In the next month the furnishing and the planting will be coming.
Under the building will be an Oceanarium where will be showed the wildlife of the Indian Ocean with sharks, rays, coralls and others.
I the Green Pyramid there will be show the three Asian elephants female, the Indian rhinoceroses, a new group of orang-outans, komodo dragons, common palm civets, pygmy slow loris, Bettongias and other mammals, birds, reptiles etc... :)
 
Thanks! Do you know more about the planned species and enclosures?

I tried to search a little bit and found, there should live 200 species, thereof 50 species of fish. But other species mentioned (that were not mentioned by you previously) were only pythons (?), gharials (Sunda or Indian?) and clouded leopards. Do you know more?

I would also like to know what is the planned capacity for elephants, with or without space for a bull? And for orang-utans, there are two separated outside pens planned - for 1 or 2 groups? Will the birds roam freely or are (outside?) aviaries planned? etc...

Any other info will be appreciated! :)
 
I have just some infos... :-))
There won't be holding Asian elephant bull - they would like to breed African elephants. I think there will be holding one group of orang-outans.
I would like to go to Sosto Zoo in the next some weeks, so I hope I will hear more infos from our colleagues! :-))
 
The tiger shark, nurse shark and two sandbar sharks arrived from Malaysia through the Netherlands on Sunday.

The zoo has recently acquired African and Asian elephants, spectacled bears and Komodo dragons, and an orangutan family is scheduled to arrive in the near future.

The exhibit will open on 30th April 2010.

Here is a video of a pair of Komodo Dragons arrived to Nyiregyhaza on 12th February 2010 (from Ragunan Zoological Park, Jakarta).

The siamang is an elderly female that has spent most of her live with the orangs. She has a special bond with them and loves to play with the youngsters...

I think it's great that they managed to keep her with her beloved orang family :)
 
Yeah, I saw them together in Burgers Zoo last autumn. Be honest, I was a bit surprised of the age of Finita, AFAIK this female Siamang is 47-years-old (if it is true, she will probably be the oldest Siamang ever).

As You said, nice to keep them together henceforward. ;)
 
Can we get some review and pictures of this project? Is it like a big tropical house?

"Green pyramid to be built at Nyíregyháza Zoo

Nyíregyháza Zoo will invest in a unique, pyramid-shaped green hall for tropical plants and animals that promises to be a unique spectacle in Central and Easter Europe. According to Népszabadság, construction of the pyramid begins in autumn and will be completed by 2010.

Half of the Ft 1.6 billion (€6.4 million) investment will be covered by the EU, and the other half by the Nyíregyháza local government. Zoo manager László Gajdos says the hall will be 15 meters high and cover 5,000 square meters. It will be all green, with terraces on each level. Tropical plants such as bamboos, bromelias, palms and orchids will be introduced, and an ocenarium will be built its base while adventure paths and open elevators will lead to the top.

Gajdos has recently returned from Indonesia where he negotiated the exchange of several animals. A pair of Komodo monitors and two Sumatran elephants will arrive to Nyíregyháza in exchange for Madagascar lemurs, clawed monkeys and weeper capuchins. Indonesian zoo experts will also be coming to Hungary to learn about programs running in European zoos."


Some of the earliest plans were changed, e.g. no Sumatran Elephants arrived, see one of kiang's previous post.

Two very unique features from this new exhibit which I saw last week include -

1) A glass floored and walled walk-way above the indoor elephant house which share the space with gibbons!

2) Takin mixed with indian rhino :) never seen this before!
 
Orangutans

What a fascinating video. I'm so glad they've got such a wonderful new home, with climbing opportunities that they used straight away.
 
It certainly looks much better than the Burger's enclosure. I liked the way the Siamang was reintroduced straightaway by the looks of it, as the Orangs were familiar with it/them. I've seen other films of Apes(both Gorillas and Orangutans) being introduced to new enclosures- both species usually enter and start climbing/using the new equipment almost immediately, though you can see their eyes are roving around taking in all the new features too. The exception is frequently new outdoor areas- particularly where they comprise an unfamiliar or novel feature e.g. grass and /or open sky the Apes often won't enter it straightaway.

I think the middle portion of this Video could have been entitled 'I drove all night'.;)
