Zoo animals you want to see but haven't yet

I personally have seen many animals in the wild at all, but yeah Healsville even has a nice little family going, I'd love to see a Pugle one day.

Colin,
I'm with you on badly wanting to see a platypus! In the wild would be great, but even in a zoo would be fantastic too.

Ituri, as for the Jentinck's duikers, you said "not sure there are any left". I'm pretty sure the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas has them -- and they're the ONLY ones.

I've seen most of the animals on this site, but some that I haven't (in addition to the platypuses):

Whale shark (gotta get to Atlanta), great white shark, elephant seal, narwhal.
>> Why is most of my wish list aquatic?

@ Chlidonias, i believe this thread was about Zoo Animals, and as far as a know some of your animals are not in zoos :P
such as could be directed at other people also...kakapo and Javan rhino anyone? Anyway I dare say all the species I selected could be found in zoos somewhere, probably even the giant armadillo in some South American zoo

I'm not sure about the Vietnam popualtion with the Javan Rhino but I'm sure that all Javan Rhinos in Indoensia live in Ujong National park,

.but I'm sure that seeing them in the wild would be amazing.

The interesting thing was that seeing a wild Platypus was far less difficult than I expected it to be. I followed one for several hundred yards upstream as it swam and dived for yabbies(Crayfish) just by walking very quietly along the bank behind it. I must have seen half a dozen in different places, just by choosing likely- looking places at the best time of day.

None at Slimbridge but they still have a pair at Arundul WWT.

Another species quite easy to see in the wild in the right areas(torrent rivers) of NZ. They are great- I saw them somewhere, would it be Tongeraro National Park?

Arundel is a little bit nearer for Gentle Lemur though....;)

not so easy any more unfortunately. In the last decade the population has declined from an estimated 1200 pairs to fewer than 600 pairs. There are some places (especially in the central North Island) where they can still readily be found if you know where to go, but many rivers where they were once common are either now entirely bereft of blue duck or they are reduced to a few pairs or lone males. In the South Island they are more or less now restricted to the upper reaches of alpine streams. The surviving populations are usually skewed towards males because the females are killed on the nest by stoats and other introduced predators. They are more difficult to conserve than most NZ birds because they are so specialised and there are literally no offshore islands with suitable habitat for them: they have to be preserved on the mainland amongst the predators because there is nowhere else for them to go.

I had no idea Blue Duck had crashed.:(
The same NZ problem affecting yet another species.
This is very serious, are they able to supplement the diminishing numbers with captive breeding, to at least halt the decline?

there is a captive-breeding programme and captive-bred young are being released to the wild, but that of course doesn't address the real issue for the population crash, which is largely the introduced predators (and to a somewhat lesser extent, habitat destruction through damming, pollution, forest loss, etc). The only real permanent solution to saving the blue duck would be the elimination of all the predators, and that isn't going to happen unfortunately.
