Zoo/Aquarium Trips, 2011

Heh... Looks like I get to start the 2011 thread. :D

First, let me say parts of 2010 were a bust, while others were a definite boom. On the 'Bust' side was the run to Bandon, OR (no time/funds), and the backstage trip to Pt. Defiance (lost interest in the marine mammal field in its current state).

Expanding on that a bit: I decided, last year, to let my IMATA membership drop (I kept AZA and AAZK). There were a variety of reasons, some of which could be considered "out there" in terms of beliefs, but the short version is I feel the organization has grown too big for its britches. There's far too much in terms of politics, and far too little in terms of mutual respect. In many ways it feels like the marine mammal field, as a whole, has become stagnant, so mired in their status quo that nothing short of a miracle could pull them out.

On the 'Boom' side: Minnesota Zoo, and the four-day workshop at UMN's Gabbert Raptor Center, both of which were wildly successful. Now I've got a few spare minutes, I'll probably go post some of the photos.

Coming up for 2011: It's ten months out, but my lady and I will be doing a major trip south to visit SD Zoo and WAP. I've already been in contact with the raptor folk at WAP, so it looks like we may get a 'backstage' look at the place as well as seeing the show.

I'll probably do day trips to Woodland Park and Pt. Defiance this year, once the weather warms up. Nothing else major is pending at the moment.

Happy travels.

2010 was a good year for me. Got to visit my local, Belfast, quite often which is always awesome to do.
Also got to travel again this year to London so I was able to visit London zoo (literally from opening to closing time), London Aquarium and Paradise Wildlife Park, where I got to feed the African lions wahey!!!!:D
Also been able to start work experience down at WWT Castle Espie so it's all good!!

2011 I'll defiantly be up at Belfast a lot,and seeing as this year may be the day I start driving...I'll be up A LOT!
I wave visit another zoo....probably Dublin once at Easter and once in the summer. so that's likely but the zoos I really want to visit are

Edinburgh
Chester
Marwell
Longleat
Whipsnade
Bristol

But I doubt I'd get to any of these bar one (and even that's a stretch cause it's expensive to get to them.

I visited several zoos I've been to before in 2010, but only two new zoos - Antwerp Zoo and Planckendael. But I were very fond of both of them, and I also got to explore a new country (Belgium), so I guess that's fine. My goal this year is however not to see a new zoo per se, but saving up money to go to New York, as I've never actually been to the States before. And if I manage to get the money, it's surely not impossible that I'll go to see Bronx Zoo or Central Park Zoo.

Oops! I didn't see this thread before I commented on the 2010 thread. Oh well, if I update my list, I'll do it on this thread.

for me, apart for the local Christchurch zoos, it looks like I'll be going to Zoo Negara in Kuala Lumpur (and maybe fit in the KL Bird Park and the KLCC Aquaria as well if I can) and then Perth Zoo and AQWA, and possibly Adelaide Zoo and some Melbourne area collections
