Zoo Atlanta Zoo Atlanta News 2021

An Angolan colobus was born February 6:

Baby born at Zoo Atlanta

The newborn is the offspring of Adanna and George and is the sixth infant born into the Zoo’s Angolan colobus troop, which now includes 10 animals.

In addition to its parents, the group also includes its grandmother, Lami; adult female Kinshasa; and siblings and half-siblings Gerri, Kito, Orlando, Zera, and Zuli.

One of the Raccoon Dogs Loki passed away at 11 years old
Sad news from the Zoo Atlanta family: We’re saddened to share news of the passing of Loki the tanuki today. Loki was considered geriatric for his species – he would have been 11 years old in May. He had recently been under the care of our Veterinary Team for age-related health issues and kidney disease. Given his age and the fact that he did not have a promising prognosis, the team made the difficult decision to euthanize him today.

Is the other Raccoon dog Thor still around?

Oklahoma City has some in Sanctuary Asia
Well, I'm going to Atlanta for the first time next week... I was super hype to see tanuki, they were by far the animal I was most excited for. I'm glad they are, in fact, in another US zoo, but man, I don't think that I'll ever be in Oklahoma...

Here is a partial list of the species on exhibit on 11/3/20 in Scaly Slimy Spectacular, the smaller 'Georgia Extremes' building of native animals was closed during my visit, and there were 5 empty exhibits in the Main Building.

Does Zoo Atlanta have any invertebrate exhibits or an invertebrate house in addition to their new reptile and amphibian complex?

A female Western lowland gorilla has been transferred from Zoo Knoxville:

Endangered western lowland gorilla Machi returns to Zoo Atlanta

Machi first came to Zoo Atlanta with her mother, Choomba, in 1988 from Emory University’s Yerkes National Primate Research Center. She lived at the Zoo until 2013, when she moved to the Knoxville Zoo.

Zoo Atlanta says Machi will join their geriatric group, where she will be reunited not only with her mother but with her former mate Ozzie and gorilla Kuchi, with whom she has lived with before.

A Lappet-faced Vulture has hatched at Zoo Atlanta. The first in the zoo's history: Zoo Atlanta: Lappet-Faced Vulture Hatches At Zoo Atlanta
Just read the story and be amazed that the hard work of zoo staff to get the pair bonding, breeding and hatching a chick over the last decade. Actually, the pair has been producing infertile eggs for 8 seasons prior to this one and the first 2 eggs from this year were infertile too. Only their 3rd egg proved fertile and was taken for incubation and the parents given a dummy egg. When the chick hatched it stayed behind for another 10 days in rearing before being reintroduced to its parents. And the pair have done beautifully since ..., kudos to everyone involved!

BTW: Also nice reminding ourselves it is the 2nd important vulture hatching this year as a hooded vulture was also hatched earlier at Atlanta Zoo! To top it off: it is a full F2 generation as both parents are an F1 breeding pair born in captivity in the early 2000's.
