Zoo Atlanta Zoo Atlanta News 2024

Oof, I somehow missed that. My main takeaway from that update was that nothing had changed and the timeline is still fairly vague, so I clearly just glossed over that part. I hope it's more because it's "too soon" or something and not that either party is disinterested in their return.
Yeah, it is disappointing. If I were a gambling man, and I am, I would bet that they are getting out of giant panda. I am not sure how much they are offering the zoo at this point, one would imagine they would need to expand the habitat if they were to get another pair.

Atlanta's tigers and clouded leopards could both use more space. It seems to me like it should be easy enough to convert the panda habitat to house a big cat. Some smaller animal could then fill the empty cat habitat.

Is that space really bigger than the tiger yard? It looked rather small to me, in comparison to the tiger yard. But that could simply be perspective.

The panda exhibit is hard to properly judge because it's split up across multiple enclosures. Just mentally eyeballing it though, I think they could plausibly repurpose the panda area into a nice expansion for both of those cats. You'd also be able to do away with the queues, leaving them with even more space to work with. The potential's certainly there, at least - I just hope that whatever the outcome, they don't squander it.

I haven't seen it in two years, but I remember the tiger habitat looking fairly small and boring. The panda habitat is almost definitely bigger, and at least much more complex and interesting with the multiple yards, rooms, and enrichment items.

The tiger habitat probably could stand to be larger, but I feel like it's also been hard for me personally to gauge given how sloped it is and how difficult (if not impossible) it is to grasp the full size of it from any of the viewing windows. I've definitely seen smaller tiger exhibits within the AZA, at least.

Regardless, you're probably right in that if the spot is to be recycled for a current zoo denizen, the tiger would probably be the best choice and then they can import more raccoon dogs to put in the now-emptied tiger habitat

A great conservation project in situ. Hopefully, more zoos in US and elsewhere will sponsor this new zoo based conservation project in Guatemala if they hold the Guatemalan ssp.!!!

Lily and Flo, two new female White Storks have arrived from a unspecified facility and are now on display with there current 2 females. The zoo has been chosen to house an all female group and the birds will move to other facilities to breed once the SSP decides to pair them.
