Zoo Atlanta Zoo Atlanta News 2025

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I thought I'd give it a go anyway. This Sunday, I'll be in Atlanta for a day as part of a layover. In the morning, I plan to visit the Georgia Aquarium, but in the afternoon, I'd also love to go to Zoo Atlanta.

I was wondering if anyone has any tips or advice on the easiest and quickest way to get from the aquarium to the zoo. I don't have a driving licence or anything like that. I was thinking of using Uber, but that would mean I’d need WiFi at the aquarium or the zoo to book one. Does anyone know if WiFi is available there? Or are there better transport options?

Additionally, are there any must-see animals or experiences at the zoo that I shouldn’t miss if I'm short on time? Are there any species or attractions that I wouldn’t typically find in the Netherlands or Europe?

The website lists Wolf’s guenon, Schmidt’s guenon, Hoffmann’s two toes sloth, Angolan colobus, and Panamanian golden frog, which I believe are rare or not found in Europe.

Also, there’s a herp exhibit that is known to be one of the best in the states. I skimmed through it last time but it should have a lot of European rarities. There’s a “treehouse” exhibit with the guenons @PossumRoach mentioned that also had drills, lemurs and a walkthrough aviary. The children’s zoo also has some possible rarities. I’d recommend an Uber as the zoo and aquarium are pretty far apart. If I recall correctly, there should be WiFi at the aquarium.

This Sunday, the Georgia Aquarium will be open 9am-8pm (the aquarium is generally open until later than the zoo). So IF it's feasible and you are willing/able to stay late (as I understand you will not be driving your own vehicle), I would actually suggest doing Zoo Atlanta in the Morning/Early Afternoon and then doing the Aquarium afterwards, since the Aquarium is open later and thus you will be able to allocate more time towards both facilities.

As for must-see experiences at the zoo if you are short on time; there are a few. Definitely prioritize their reptile house Slimy Scaly Spectacular; it's currently my #1 reptile house and it packs an excellent collection of rarities, including two species of beaded lizard not housed anywhere else in the country (to my knowledge). Next, high-tail it over to the Living Treehouse and Monkeys of Makokou to see some excellent monkey exhibits as well as the only Drills in the country. Lastly, their great ape exhibits are also very good, as is their Asia/Predator complex.

they no longer have exclusivity rights on those two beaded lizard species, the Guatemalan can found at a handful of facilities now(san antonio, and oklahoma city are two I've personally seen them exhibited at in addition to Atlanta, and I believe they are at a few other places aswell, still very rare compared to the mexican and rio fuerte beaded lizards., the black beaded lizard is still extremely rare though and too my knowledge only san diego exhibits them besides atlanta. I don;t know if they are still on display but the zoo did exhibit the only colony of Mona Island Coqui Frog during my last visit(sadly didn't see them). they should also have Western Plantain-Eater in one of the aviaries up front which is a rare specie in US zoos.

I’m still considering whether I might visit the aquarium in the afternoon, but that will also depend on my travel companions, who are definitely going to the aquarium. I’m still undecided on the order—whether to do the zoo first or the aquarium—but I’ll keep it in mind. Appreciate the tips!

I say do the zoo in the morning and then do the aquarium
 
Mixed feelings on the panda news. Zoo Atlanta won't be the same without them and they're obviously a huge crowd pleaser, but I was also looking forward to seeing the zoo do something new with the former panda space. Either way is fine, I guess.

Unfortunately, the pup was stillborn.
Zoo Atlanta on Instagram: "Last month, we were so excited to share with you that Carolina the meerkat was expecting, and you were excited with us to anticipate welcoming this birth. We are sorry to share that although Carolina gave birth to a pup Saturday night, the pup did not survive. In the excitement, hope, and joy that always surrounds baby animals, we also know that all animal newborns are fragile, especially in their first hours and days of life. Newborn meerkats are born blind, deaf and nearly hairless. Carolina, Kiwano, Amarna, and Digby are all doing well, and we have no reason to anticipate that we will not have the privilege of again sharing great news from this meerkat mob in the future.
