Zoo Basel Zoo Basel News

These domes near the entrance will have some aquatic displays, given corals (and manatees...) are one of the focus areas. The money for these domes comes from the funds originally for the aquarium.

Yes they will.
fantastic, i prefered if they kept the sea lion instead of adding fur seals tho since Zurich will add them too in their future masterplan and i think theyre a more interesting species, since no other zoo in Switzerland keeps them currently...Connlyand has south american sea lions not californian ones

The Zoo Zurich will add Steller sea lions and not fur seals in future, so we will still have a sea lion species from the northern hemisphere in switzerland. ;-)

i just realised that too

i also realised they will move the cheetahs and african wild dogs, so i assume the lion enclosure will be expanded eventually too

Could you please let me know if there is a PDF or any other documents/images available regarding the master plan? At the moment, I’ve only come across news articles but haven't been able to find the original source.

I asked the same on the facebook of the zoo, hopefully they will give one out, since it seems the clearly made a visualisation of the project

Unfortunately the only thing I found was that Image of the african/coastal part of the model. I hope for a information PDF too.
Here is a link to the article with that picture:

On the plan with the walking animals you can see a crocodile, where the wilddogs are now. But I think they will expand the lion enclosure too.

And the new masterplan for the coming 25 years has been presented :)

Some of the major changes:

- In the area in front of the new entrance up to the current Africa house (hippo & zebra stable) several (4) domes will be constructed for a variety of tropical species, including manatees, gharials and corals. The outdoor section will be gardens about local biodiversity.

- The extension zone behind the second entrance (now behind the scenes area) will become the site of a savanna with giraffes, zebra, ostrich, common hippo and antelope. Additionally enclosures for South African fur seal (new species) and African penguin (already at the zoo) will be built.

- The Sautergarten (the area currently holding e.g. rhinos, snow leopards, African penguin, pygmy hippo) will be netted over for birds and be completely Asian themed. Snow leopards & long-tailed macaques will leave the zoo permanently, the pygmy hippo and African penguin will be relocated. It seems like Malayan tapir and some other Asian hoofstock will be added here too.

- The current lower part of the zoo with the children's zoo will get a large forest house with okapi & pygmy hippo. Additionally it seems like the lesser kudu will move to the current sable antelope enclosure in the near future.

- The current antelope house (giraffes, lesser kudu, okapi) will be used as the new children's zoo.

- The cheetahs and African wild dogs will move towards the entrance towards where the zebra & common hippo are kept now. Both species will get more space. The site of the current African wild dog enclosure has a crocodile sign, so there will likely be a summer enclosure for crocodiles there.

- The Californian sea lions will leave the zoo and their historic enclosure will be remodelled for Malayan sun bears.

- Species like NA tree porcupine, bison, European mouflon, reindeer, wild boar & coypu will also leave the zoo.

- The first projects will be the new lesser kudu enclosure (also for other small unspecified antelopes) and a new kea aviary (unclear where), as well a a renovation of the administration building (behind the lesser kudu)

Zentrum der Artenvielfalt mitten in der Stadt: Masterplan «Zolli 2049» mit Umsetzungsstart Ende 2024
I'm curious - so if the cheetahs and African wild dogs are moving to the current zebra/ostrich/hippo savanna, would that mean they'd be eyeing that space for expanding Tembea further out?

Diese Tiere kommen neu und diese müssen gehen: Zoo Basel stellt seine Pläne bis 2049 vor

More images in this article and also more mentions of future animals like sloths, binturongs, fishing cats or goliath frogs (!!)

Interesting, also to see some planned construction dates, which implies there is a whole document floating around somewhere ;)

Citizen Conservation (the same consortium Basel got their Rio Pescado stubfood toads from) has been wanting to import goliath frogs for years, until now without success. If there is any group who could pull it off it is probably them....

There must be, although may be not online.

The plans look very good, and expansive. I liked that the Antelope house becomes a children area, because this smallish historic house is hard to turn into a naturalistic modern animal area. I am not sure, but the graphics suggest that the tropical domes will be partially covered with earth with the walking paths over them?

I look forward to the actual construction of first new exhibits - kudus and keas, it seems.

I asked the zoo basel about a PDF or any other documents and unfortunately they will not publish a PDF about the masterplan. So the pictures and the information centre in the zoo are the only things we have about the masterplan.

Bummer, I would have hoped they would be more transparent about the new Masterplan.

There is a small building dedicated to the masterplan by the entrance of the too. The wall is mostly covered with photos we have already seen in articles, but there also is a miniature model of the future zoo. Everything is now accessible in the gallery

There is also a timeline detailling when each project should be completed. But I've realised just now that the photo I took cuts out half of it...
