This new thread kicks off with the news that last year the zoo had a record year for attendances to the zoo, 2.012 million visitors.
 
An Indian rhino, so far not sexed, was born at the zoo on the night of October 5th to "ELLORAS" and in a European first, the calf was born in the presence of it's older brother "KIRAN".
 
Good News. But also"Kiran"himself was born in the presence of his sister"Henna"two years ago-and this was the"Premiere".
 
Are you sure this information is correct? Zoo Basel told me "Ellora" died in spring 2015 because of health issues.

Maybe her daughter "Quetta" gave birth to a baby.
 
Just checked dates/pictures: I was at Basel Zoo on the 11th of october. There were the following rhinos on display (outdoor): male Jaffna; female Quetta with her calf Jari (* 2012) and calf Kiran (* 2013 from Ellora). I didn't see a newborn calf.

(I'm sorry. I'm not that good in english...).


Edit: Kiran (calf to Ellora and Jaffna) was born the 5th of october in 2013 in presence of his sister Henna ...
 
I had a little google and I think kiang's information comes from a site where someone is mixing up their dates and names.

The information is quite similar to what is on (for example) Zooborns' article about Elloras' 2013 birth of Kiran, where it has sentences like "At Zoo Basel in Switzerland, an Indian Rhinoceros gave birth during the night on October 5", and "Kiran's 3-year-old sister, Henna, was also present for the birth. This was the first time in a European zoo that a Rhinoceros birth has taken place in the presence of an older sibling, as it occurs in nature."

I too have found the same info, the initial news came from actu'zoo, so perhaps something lost in translation.
Apologies for the confusion caused.
 
Male Indian Rhinos, Kiran and Jari have now moved to Bassin d'Arcachon in France
 
Basel Zoo has again Woolly monkeys. On Oct.28 2 males arrived, Sabio a 5 year old male came from Apenheul in the Netherlands and the second male, Branco is 6 years old but I don't know where he came from.
 
I was at the zoo recently and while watching the elephants they seemed to be upset due to the noise of the building work on their new exhibit. They were seeking reassurance from each other and they also spread their ears forward in alarm.
