Berlin Zoo Zoo Berlin News 2016

Here is an overview of the enclosure from this link which suggests it is just one corner of the overall deer area. I believe the white circle in the bottom right hand corner of the picture is the muntjac enclosure.

Out of interest, how many of us are happy to exchange the entire deer complex at Zoo Berlin for a large display for monochromatic money-sinks? :p

I know I'm somewhat reactionary when it comes to Berlin Zoo, but I think this is an awful plan: the deer area is an iconic part of Berlin, and it is the sort of thing that gives the zoo its character.

And I'm not sure about the slightly dubious-looking fellow in the bottom right of the picture: with his confident swagger, designer sunglasses and generously-unbuttoned shirt, he doesn't look like your average zoo nerd....

The thing that bothers me about the new panda complex is the fact that the director has been justifying his many changes and alterations in the name of increasing revenue for the two Berlin collections and modernising them - and shackling the collection to an expensive 10-year loan of Giant Panda is rather likely to *decrease* revenue for Zoo Berlin in the long run!

Given how fast Edinburgh Zoo went from one of the best collections in the United Kingdom to a sad and upsetting collection in decline within a few short years in the aftermath of going into Giant Panda, the possible impact of the return of the species to Zoo Berlin frankly worries me, especially given the fact this return comes hand-in-hand with a reduction in species.....

There is not a big reduction in species due to this development. The barasingha are now in the former serow enclosure, the musk deer went to the Tierpark and the pere davids deer and muntjak will feature in the new exhibit... What will happen to the pudu and axis deer I do not know... About half of the deer area remains untouched by these developments, so I do not understand all this complaining about 2 species lost.....

And besides Edinburgh there are more zoos who have gone into pandas and none of these has reduced its species numbers as a consequence of the arrival of our black-and-white friends... And additionally the Berlin Zoo has a lot more potential in terms of revenue than Edinburgh to be honest, especially in terms of tourists
