Berlin Zoo Zoo Berlin News 2017

I am a bit concerned they might not be able to make the July deadline for the P.R. Chinese state visit to Berlin which would coincide with the exhibit's opening ceremony.

If changes are to be made then no way. The building shell was all there in March but nothing else was done. Actually nice to be able to see the building work and not have giant screens stopping you seeing anything which we very much do over here in the UK.

You can scream what you like as an outsider, the P.R. Chinese will have it their way. This given that they have a vested interest economic and otherwise for giant panda conservation in situ and abroad. It is not the receiving zoos in the driving seat nor ahead in the decision making process, it is the CWCA / China Zoos Association and the Ministry of Environment / F.O. Ignore that and ye will get to know China is more than just a billion+ individuals, but a nation to be reckoned with on the world stage (and much as you might like otherwise) ..., they have a significant stake on our Planet Earth.

Example - and by far not the only one - and please note: Rhenen and Giant Panda and postponement of their arrival by a good year.

Having visited Zoo Berlin on 6/6/17, I would be amazed if the panda exhibit were ready by the end of July. If time taken to build major exhibits at zoos in the UK is anything to go by, it may well not be ready by October!

@pipaluk was there still a single male gerenuk in the giraffe house?
Sorry, i didn't go inside, due to time factors, so I can't say. I didn't realise there would be anything else inside. I saw them at Tierpark the day before though.

No worries, they were a no show at Tierpark so was glad to see them at Berlin a few days later.

Got pics of the panda enclosure? I didn't bother to take any when I was there in April be interesting to see if it has moved on at all.

Sorry, didn't think to take pictures of it, it was so far from completion!

Ready or not - the Giant Panda's will be arriving on 24th June
Very surprised to hear this! Don't know where they could go. What I believe was the previous panda enclosure is on the edge of a building site and very noisy, so can't see that being suitable.
Possibly one of the 3 Sloth bear enclosures ( largest one), which had what looked like bamboo transfers on the windows last week .

Are there really three Sloth bear enclosures? I thought at least one of those was for Asiatic black bear.

Walking anti clockwise from the Polar Bear enclosure, there is a small ( former polar bear holding?) enclosure with a black Swan in it, then a small enclosure holding a single Sloth bear. Then a much larger enclosure with mother & cub, followed by the largest enclosure that held another Sloth Bear. Then there was a moated enclosure containing an Asiatic black bear next to the Arctic wolves.

Aha! That moated one was the Brown bear enclosure in 2015. So no brown bears now?

A new indoor nocturnal enclosure for kiwi has opened in the zoo's birdhouse.

That sounds interesting - does it open off the Australian part? Hard to tell how big the enclosure is though.
