2019 marked the 175th anniversary of this institution and the birth of two Giant Pandas as the main highlight of the year can be considered a worthy birthday present:

What will 2020 bring then?

Of course the panda twins are going to follow in the pawsteps of Berlin Tierpark's polar bear offspring Hertha, winning the hearts of Berlin and its visitors.

And as with the Tierpark this may have to compensate for further delay with the carnivore building. Just days after I read about a reopening scheduled for the coming autumn/ fall, Mr. Knieriem announced that the building expectedly is to be finished this year. This usually does not mean anything good...

But even if I am too pessimistic about that, there definitely will be one large construction site this year: The project for the new rhino pagoda is to be started in 2020 (opening scheduled for 2022).

Does anyone know the current status of the Andean and Puna Flamingos at the zoo? It would seem they have 10 adult Punas and 14 adult Andeans. Any breeding in 2019?

Zoo Berlin had another strong year. In 2019 about 3.73 mio people visited the famous park and its Aquarium. The carnivore building is supposed to open by the end of 2020.

By April 16th, they hatched an Edward's pheasant chick.

Asian Black Bear Plato was sadly euthanized on March 16th because of Pancreatic Cancer.

On June 19th, 2 red-legged serie as hatched.

On June 10th, a red kangaroo got out of the pouch. Its sex is unknown and is the son of father Stanley and mother Puppi.

6 meerkats were born in May. They now are on exhibit along with their parents and four older siblings.

On March 6th, a bearded vulture chick hatched. This is the first offspring of the pair though they raised an orphan female chick from Tierpark Berlin in 2011. She has since been reintroduced to the wild.

On May 9th, 5 panther chameleons were born at the Zoo's aquarium.

@AD, not sure. I do think it is still under wraps.

Some species like lions, tigers and one of the leopard species have been named/cited previously (and the lions and tigers are probably back at BZ) as would some small felid species and the Malagasy Carnivora.

This plans been floating around for some time for the renovated carnivore building. Most names are self explanatory, but it would be great if someone could translate, the not obvious ones.

Sandkatze (with a typo in the graphic) = Sand Cat
Ringelschwanzmungo = Ring-tailed Mongoose (Vontsira)
Schmalstreifenmungo = Narrow-striped Mongoose (Boky-boky)
Zwergmanguste = Dwarf Mongoose

They could copy a setup of Frankfurt zoo's tigers: build a new footpath over the pond south of the building, and extend the exhibits 'Jaguar' so that part of the pond would be a jaguar swimming moat.

The central area where they currently plan leopards, jaguarundis and mongoose could work better as one big exhibit viewed from a wire / glass tunnel with leopards moving overhead. And it would not be too spacious. Only an adequate size.

I would also put new outside exhibits in the bird paddocks to the north, connected to the building by overhead or underground passages.

I think something like that with tunnels is already planned, but in the direction of the underused paddocks opposite the tigers, I remember that being mentioned sometime ago.
