James Flamingo hatched and a healthy chick is around, bringing the group up to 7 individuals. The Press report states that besides a very old animal at Wuppertal, it's the only group in any Zoo.

I guess the WWT in slimbridge ain't a zoo and they only have 3.0 (that right?) so they are more or less right. And i'm still not sure if the animal at Wuppertal is still alive because it hasn't been seen in their mixed flamingo group for quite some time, does anyone know any more?

Anyways, such a rare birth in Europe is always good news!
 
One of the James flamingo chicks has not survived, but the second one, together with the Andean one, is fine.
 
Some time ago I heard that there was a plan for a 5 million litres aquarium in berlin zoo, with the giant manta ray as a main inhabitant. I haven't heard of this plan since that time. Does anybody have more information about this subject?
 
I don't know about that, but it sounds interseting!
However, if that's their only plans then they need to sort their priorities out; The bear enclosures and many others need some serious work before anything like that should be done.
 
I'm sure, the zoo has had never the idea to display mantasrays, because the have no speca for a big tank of the size to keeping mantas. What the wanted to do is, to build an expansion to the present building to keep more sharks. But they have no money yet, to build this expansion.

The zoo has another handraised anteater, born in december. This time, its a female. I'm so sorry for the keepers, its very hard for them to handraise an anteater....
 
I have heard that hand-reared giant anteaters can be a real problem when they are adult , I think it is the case for the male at Edinburgh .
 
Do you have any idea why that is? I know a lot of hand reared animals can cause problems, but some of them (eg- big cats) seem to do ok with their own species.
 
After I've met "Adolpho", the first hand raised anteater at the Berlin Zoo,I've spoken to a woman, who has raised by herself some anteaters in another zoo and worked with some adulte handraised anteaters, too. They never had any problems with the handraised anteaters and tehy have bred normally. They have just one problem anteater at this zoo, he is very aggressive and attcks the animal keepers, so noboydy goes inside to him, but he is mother raised. Most hoofed animals can be a real problem if they are hand raised, mostly the males, but many females also.

Well, a 5 million litre aquarium could house manta rays. And I have been looking at the map of the zoo, next to the aquarium building is a large pond filled with ducks. So there's room for an annex there. But an annex for sharks would surely be a good idea, since the current aquarium with larger sharks isn't adequate, especially not for the sandtigershark.
 
The pond will stay, and I think, the plans for the expansion for the aquarium are gone, but I can ask somebody at the Zoo, if you want.
 
Well, aquariums have my special interest, and I was very fond of Zoo Berlin, especially its aquarium. So I would like to hear more about it;)
 
I will be in Berlin next week (monday to friday) and will be able to sneak in a few visits to the zoo. Unfortunately, I probably won't be able to make it to the Tierpark this time.

I have not been to Berlin since March 2007. Is there anything special I should keep my eye out for (species, new exhibits, etc.)?

I am looking forward to seeing the renovated nocturnal house and revisit all the other fine exhibits at the Berlin Zoo :)
 
Could you get some pictures of the new chimp exhibit please? It's the big cage on the way into the Ape house.
There are a couple of pictures on here but not many, I'm curious as to what it looks like as it was only being built when I went. Thanks :)
