I am constantly frustrated by how much attention red pandas get compared to other species at small and large zoos alike. The matter that this exhibit will be have the capacity to hold twelve when there are likely other populations that would benefit from Zoo Boise's resources is sadly the perfect example. I suspect that this number is only for media relations and won't be the reality, but the fact that they are advertising twelve is worrisome.

On December 11th, the zoo announced that construction was pushed back to spring 2024, and will include the aforementioned new sand cat/red panda exhibits and the educational campus, as well as a new gift shop and renovations to the Small Animal Kingdom building.

The aforementioned meerkats as well as the desert tortoises were moved into the gift shop exhibits.

To answer my own question, it turns out that there is now only one holder of the East African subspecies of Striped Hyena*; with the remaining twelve holders maintaining non-subspecific individuals.

*at the The Living Desert Zoo, in Palm Springs, California.

That’s a real shame, do we (roughly) know how many holders of Striped Hyena are currently left in the nation?
Within the AZA, The Living Desert Zoo and Naples Zoo each have one individual, while Utica Zoo has two individuals. There are more holders in the United States outside of the AZA - something around 16 individual striped hyenas.
