"Sailing with Noah: Stories From the World of Zoos" by Dr. Jeffrey Bonnor. He's the President of the Saint Louis Zoo and the past President of the Indianapolis Zoo. This book is really informative about conservation issues, the importance of zoos, and the future of zoos. It even has some humerous stories about animal escapes and encounters and is a good read, at 20 something chapters. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

"Sailing With Noah" (mentioned above) is perhaps the best defense of the need for zoos, very worthwhile, although the writing style is not quite up to par (Mr. Bonner is obviously not a writer, but the info is worthwhile).
"Jumbo" (I forget the author) has good historical info about London Zoo and its efforts to aquire african elephant.
"Keepers Of The Kingdom" photos by Nick Nichols (National Geographic) and chapters by various zoo directors. One of the best zoo books ever published.

Written by zookeepers, this small booklet is full of anecdotes about keepers and the animals they look after, about the public (under the title "The Great Unwashed"), Murphy's Laws of Zookeeping, amusing phonecalls, mispronounced animal names, clever animal names (eg. Lynx named 'Cuff' and 'Missing') and a miscellaneous section.
I only have the first edition, but there was talk about a second edition and it possibly includes the list of "You know you're a zoo keeper when..."

If you'd like to try a fictional slant on the zoo world, there's a "zoo-dunnit" titled Night Kill by (cough, cough) Ann Littlewood. Got a great review in Natural History magazine!
Just to let people know that My Marwellous Life: In Zoos and Conservation, the autobiography by Marwell's founder John Knowles comes out within the next two weeks.

Dr. Fisher's Life On the Ark by Lester E. Fisher, DVM, a book about Dr. Fisher's experiences at the Lincoln Park Zoo. He was the director of Lincoln Park Zoo for 30 years and took over from Marlin Perkins. Dr. Fisher still lives across the street from Lincoln Park Zoo and visits the zoo regularly.
Tigers in the Snow by Peter Matthiessen, a book about the joint Soviet-US Siberian (now called Amur) Tiger Project. I mention it because there's a chapter on the Indianapolis Zoo.
The Ark in the Park by Mark Rosenthal with 2 others, a history of the Lincoln Park Zoo. Rosenthal was a former large mammal curator who started as a keeper. During his career, he was also the studbook keeper for the Spectacle Bear SSP.
