Zoo de Granby Zoo de Granby news

"Augmenter à 30 % le nombre d’espèces au statut précaire ou menacé sous nos soins" would be more to reach 30% for the number of species under their care that are threatened. This could be done by decreasing the number of least concerned species. Or they might be replacing some species. I wonder what road they'll actually take on this one.

Great, I hope there will be breeding success at the Zoo Granby.
In other news, the Zoo announced that one of its female dholes was euthanized due to respiratory problems. The Zoo discovered that there was a cancerous cell near the lungs. The Zoo made the decision to euthanize her to end her suffering. But the Zoo didn't announce who the dhole that passed away was, so we do not know. The group is now down to 2.4 individuals. Hopefully there will be more success with breeding.
Here is the reply in the comments from the Zoo(Translated)
You are correct: the dhole pack previously consisted of seven individuals, two males and five females. During a routine checkup, one of the females, who was showing signs of respiratory problems, was examined more closely. A large cancerous mass near her lungs was unfortunately detected. To avoid unnecessary suffering and respect her well-being, our veterinary team made the difficult decision to euthanize her. Thank you for your interest and concern for our animals.

I am able to confirm that Berezi, the female dhole, was the one who passed away. The Zoo recently posted a video about International Dhole Day. The zoo said that she passed away in winter 2024. Sadie is now the leader of the group.

As I mentioned here, Lua, the female jaguar, will be moving to the Brevard Zoo. The Zoo did a veterinarian check on her, confirming that she can move to the Brevard Zoo. The Zoo also mentioned in the comments that her sister Estrella will be moving late summer to another Zoo(Los Angeles Zoo, as mentioned in other threads). They plan on breeding Kuwan and Taima, their parents, again after the sisters leave.

Lua the jaguar has officially arrived at the Brevard Zoo. It was fun to see her and her sister grow up together. I had great memories seeing these two jaguar sisters. Wish the best to her and to her sister.

26K views · 1K reactions | We're paws-itively thrilled to welcome Lua the jaguar to our Zoo! This 5-year-old female journeyed all the way from Zoo de Granby as part of the Species Survival Plan for jaguars. This program pairs animals in AZA-accredited organizations with one another to ensure a genetically diverse safeguard population. And, yes, that means we will be getting a male jaguar to pair with Lua! We're excited to continue our legacy of helping conserve this incredible species. Make sure to stay tuned for his arrival in the coming months. And don't worry! Our 21-year-old resident jaguar, Masaya, isn't going anywhere. While Masaya made incredible contributions to her species over the years, welcoming six cubs under our care and becoming a great-grandmother in 2024, she's now past the breeding age. We will continue to care for Masaya in her golden years and ensure she's living her best life every day. Learn more about Lua on our blog or come check her out in our Rainforest Revealed habitat.

Some news:
  • On June 10, a man climbed onto the fence of the American Alligator exhibit to film a video, risking his life in the process. The Zoo said it will be augmenting security near the American alligator exhibit.
  • Source for first news: Zoo de Granby: un visiteur téméraire dans l’enclos des alligators
  • Also, the zoo lost 1,3 million in a 34 million budget due to having fewer visitors during 2024. They also mentioned in the second article that they will be using approximately 5 million dollars to do a project that will finish during the Fall of 2025(for more information read the third article)
  • Second article: Zoo de Granby: une «petite génuflexion» avant de rebondir
  • (Third article) The project consists of protecting endangered species and building a new pavilion. This pavilion will have laboratories for research and places to educate students and visitors to protect endangered species. Also they plan on expanding to rehabilitate more species like the spiny softshell turtle, wood turtle, shrike, bat, copper redhorse and chimney swift. I just visited the Zoo Granby yesterday and today they announced that the black and white ruffed lemurs is out of their 90-day quarantine. I saw their exhibits yesterday(there was a rope blocking you). It is right behind the ring-tailed lemur exhibit. I think it is currently indoor viewing for them only, until they introduce the two species togheter.

Zoo de Granby

Here are the updates/notes during my visit yesterday. Quite a few animals weren't on display for example, the ring-tailed lemur, the black lion tamarin, the golden lion tamarin, and the two-toed sloth.
  • Construction for the new pavilion mentioned in my other post hasn't started yet. According to the image, it looks like it will be in front of the Horace Boivin pavillion.
  • There is a new male lion that arrived at the Zoo Granby, his name is Kiros and the zoo is just housing him temporarily.
  • Sarah the elephant, wasn't visible all day, according to a keeper, she is taking a bath inside.
  • Interesting thing that I learned, I previously said that Cannelle and Phong(Asiatic black bear) were a mother-son duo but according to a keeper that worked with them, he said that Cannelle is actually the sister of Phong. Very strange thing, I will be emailing Reserve Africaine de Sigean for more information.
  • There was a long talk of which male gorilla will become the silverback at the Toronto Zoo. According to a keeper who works with them, Zwalani is the one moving to the Toronto Zoo to become the silverback. At the beginning, Jawara was the one destined to go there, but to keep this bachelor group of gorillas together for dynamic reasons, the decision was made to keep Jawara here.
  • Also I asked the same gorilla keeper and they said there is no immediate plan to send out Jawara or bring another bachelor male into their facilities within the next few years.
  • There aren't any Patagonian mara, only red-footed tortoise were in their outdoor exhibits. Signage for the mara were removed.
  • There are now two red crowned cranes, which wasn't the case last year.
  • I saw Sayuki, the baby Japanese macaque, he is very cute, and the keepers were doing a health checkup indoor.
  • KC the white rhino, hasn't been introduced to the two new females, Alice and Hazina and I believe he is only spending time indoors(I could be wrong).
  • There is now a new ball python exhibit in the Afrika pavilion. It seems to be empty but it is new.
  • Also I learned to differentiate the Asiatic black bear, the elephant and I am learning for the white rhinos.

I forgot a few updates/notes:
  • The Zoo is down to two female ostrich(they had three last year). They have now Sissi(orange tag) and an unnamed female(no tag when she arrived). The black tag ostrich seems to be gone.
  • Signage for the Marabou Stork was removed, and they were no-show. I do not know what happened to them.
  • The zoo has 1.1 Grey crowned crane now.

Zwalani the male gorilla has officially left the Zoo Granby to the Toronto Zoo on July 28 to be the new silverback at the Toronto Zoo. Hopefully, everything goes well and Zwalani can reproduce with the Toronto Zoo's female. Luckily, I got to see Zwalani one last time last week and hopefully I can see him at the Toronto Zoo.

Does anyone know what species of birds are in the indoor portion of the gorilla viewing? I saw a white-cheeked turaco but I forgot to take a photo of the signage for the rest. I think there are four species total in that area.

I took a photo of that signage on my visit last week
They have White Cheeked Turaco, Taveta Golden Weaver, Long Tailed Paradise Whydah, Lavender Waxbill and Red Cheeked Cordon Bleu.

Thank you! Any other photos of signage or species lists that you may have for the African, South American and cave exhibits would be appreciated! I'm trying to make a more complete species list on Zootierliste :)

Oliver and Honey, the kangaroos, will be moving to an accredited facility in Ohio. It seems like Oliver will be creating a mob at the new zoo. The Zoo did a veterinarian check confirming that he can move.

Honey and Oliver the kangaroos has moved to the Columbus Zoo to join their mob.
Columbus Zoo and Aquarium on Instagram: "Meet Oliver and Honey — the newest eastern grey kangaroos at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium! This summer, Oliver and Honey joined us from @zoodegranbyofficiel in Canada. Oliver is nearly 1.5 years old, while Honey is just over 2. Both have been described by their Animal Care teams as sweet and gentle, with curious personalities and a special interest in keepers and guests on tours. Since arriving, Oliver and Honey have quickly bonded with the other eastern grey kangaroos and are often seen spending time with their new mob. Oliver’s move to the Columbus Zoo was part of a @zoos_aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) breeding recommendation — a program designed to help ensure the long-term survival of eastern grey kangaroos in their native habitats. Visit the Kangaroo Walkabout, open daily through August 31, and say hello to Oliver and Honey on your next trip to the Zoo!"
