Zoo Děčín Zoo Decin news

Another 4 Celebes macaques were caught into trap cage this morning (they borrowed a cage used to trap wild boars grazing within town). Last 2 monkeys are on the run.

1 crested macaque got caught by a trap cage placed at someones private garden in town today.

Now, just one last monkey to go.

The last Sulawesi macaque got caught today.

He was interested in water melon eaten by girls at nearby restaurant. They threw a piece of it into a storage room and when he entered it they closed the door behind him. Heavy cavalry (zoo staff) came with nets and cage and picked him up.

Took 8 days. But no injuries or damages.

The zoo has renovated former nutria exhibit and placed there a group of polar foxes. A sibbling group of 1,2 foxes (5 months old) arrived from Tierpark Limbach-Oberfrohna in Germany.

Due to shortage of available polar foxes in Europe, the zoo had to search long time and placed reservation on the trio even before they were born.

Strange there is a shortage. When they breed they tend to have large litters. Any idea why there is a shortage?

Sorry, I don´t know why there is shortage recently. Maybe zoos are reluctant to breed at all because they are afraid they might not find suitable places for whole large litter quickly? This is not the first time I hear about Czech zoos having difficulty sourcing this species, Brno even imported some from Russia few years ago.

The new cat enclosure (originaly projected to house Amur leopards) got its first inhabitant - 5 months old male caracal from zoo Jihlava. A young female is expected soon.

Their resident pair of black storks (Ciconia nigra) has one 1 chick in nest and it´s already 1 month old.

The male stork is 29 years old. The female stork is of unknown age (wildborn), she got rescued in 1999 by zoo Olomouc and remains in captivity due to her handicap. Nobody expected this pair to have anymore chicks due to their advanced age.

Small remark about the rescue done by Olomouc.
In older times, before our country got EU membership (pre-2004), it was customary that local zoos would not turn away injured wild animals that public would bring to their gates seeking help. Most zoos would have some backstage space dedicated for rescue care - including Olomouc or Dvur Kralove. But once we got into the EU, zoos lived through a shock when they realised it´s now illegal - due to strict veterinary laws that prohibit entry of unvetted animals to zoo grounds. Only 4 zoos were in position that they could continue to run their own wildlife rescue station in separate location (Hluboka, Liberec, Chomutov, Brno) while all others just gave up on rescue work. A tale of red tape that maybe went too far.

The director said in an interview they want to get another brown bear, a female this time. Though, only for her to be on display and accompany the male, not for breeding.
There are plans on opening new exhibit(s) for new species, but the director didn't specify anything. He said that the animals are "attractive" and that there will be no glass or bars between the animals and the visitors, so I think he may be speaking of wallabies or something like that...
