Chester Zoo Zoo evacuated after animal escape

Okay lets please try to keep to facts and not guess as 2 what happened during the chimps getting out,the facts are the Chimps were confined within the House in the areas in which the public have no access, all were safely returned to the Chimps accommodation within the house. The zoo will have been evacuated and closed as a safety precaution just in case the Chimps did get out of the House,so the zoo was just making sure that NO VISITOR was at any risk at anytime.

There seemed to be a lack of information given out leading to most people not knowing what had happened and quite a few did not know they were evacuating the zoo until they got to the exit. I think that lead to some really quite upset people.

Perhaps £50 is not much money to some people. But to lots of people it is and to find out that a family day out has been ruined after spending that amount will inevitably get people angry. Particularily when there is no information on refunds or replacement tickets available.

Some people didn't appear to care what had happened and just wanted their money back. That was always going to happen.

Oh great, more ammo for CAPS

That was probably to avoid a mass panic?

I think if its logistically possible Chester might be better offering a free 'revisit' to all the people who had their day spoilt by an unfortunate incident-which luckily turned out to be not dangerous. It might make visitors more kindly disposed toward them?

The Chester Zoo website has been updated.

Chester Zoo - Visitor Information

"In the interests of public safety Chester Zoo was evacuated yesterday, Sunday 5th July as a precautionary measure. This decision was taken due to an escape of chimpanzees from Chimp Island into a keeper area, which was not accessible to the public. Chester Zoo apologises for the inconvenience and disappointment caused to our many guests and invite anyone who's day was disrupted to return for a free visit. Please ring 01244 650240 to speak to a member of Guest Services."

I hope that most people will take up this offer. It would be a real shame if even a minority of the people never came back because of what happened yesterday.

Am sorry but public safety has to come first, Chester seem to have followed the set of procedures they have in place. How do you expect them to think about refunds or a free visit when there are more important things to deal with at the time?

I think that this whole incident has been blown out of proportion. At the end of the day public safety is a priority and obviously the animals welfare as well. I think that people should realise that these things happen. Whatever the cause the zoo will sort it out and learn by it. I think that all this scare mongering by the press should be ignored. We all know that papers print stories which are not based on total fact. Why print a story where nothing happens. Lets just draw a line under the whole incident now and let the zoo move on.

Safety is always paramount and most of the zoo going public will not realise the danger mature chimps pose. While Chester may be offering a free trip on another day, that will not cover petrol costs, possibly hours travelled or hotel costs for those that stayed over and that wont be reimbursed by the zoo. Accidents do happen, but people have a right to be annoyed if there day was spoilt by (speculation) a failure in keeper procedures or maintenance.

I think that everyone is jumping the gun. No one knows the cause of this incident. We should stop the speculation and wait for the official report to come from the zoo. We can all speculate and argue about this. I am getting bored with all this repititious twaddle that people are putting out. I can understand if people have had a ruined day but we all have days where things go wrong and at least the zoo has offered a refund. As it happened late in the day I am sure that some people are just jumping on the compensation band wagon. I personally think as I previously stated we should leave this subject be and let the zoo get on with what it needs to do. No one knows what happened fully yet and we shouldn't keep speculating until they do know.

Couldn`t have put it better myself now lets just leave the zoo to sort out the facts and put things right so it doesn`t happen again.

Correction: this did not happen late in the day.

Wow, Sorry, I thought a forum was about discussion, so sorry to have bored you with my repititious twaddle. I was just trying to offer an alternative point of view, not one I agree with, but a view I unfortunately witness every day and hence I indicated speculation rather than fact. An official report from the zoo is like fining yourself if you go over the speed limit, the report is very unlikely to make it into the public domain.

wow, interesting. Its great that the zoo though takes safety very seriously. Has anything like this happened before at chester?
