Zoo Field Trips

Anyone have any fond childhood memories of field trips to the zoo? I didn't go on that many myself, but I do remember my first was at the Phoenix Zoo, and the most I remember was someone talking to us kids about the meerkats and using Timon from The Lion King as a reference point. What about the rest of you?

My public school never had any field trips to zoos unfortunately, although my high school field bio class did go to a coastal Audubon Center once.

My college offers a yearly trip to the Bronx Zoo/New York Botanical Garden, however I've never gone because the bus doesn't even leave until 10 (the zoo's opening; it's a two hour drive to the zoo) and leaves to return home at, I think, 4-4:30. I can't imagine spending money to visit Bronx for only about four hours, maybe less.

I can’t recall any elementary/middle/high school trips to traditional zoos, although my first high school did take a trip to an extensive nature center and my second took a trip where we had an opportunity to visit a small aquarium in Florida. My second also went to Disney so we went to DAK and The Seas. College so far has offered a variety of trips to zoos; some are open to the whole campus while others only to specific clubs. Two of my clubs have taken trips to zoos thus far.

I remember having two field trips to traditional zoos:

One was to my home zoo, the NEW Zoo. I was in 3rd or 4th grade. We were put into groups with one adult each. We were told that our group had to be together at all times, but other than that we could wander the zoo as we please. We were also given a worksheet to fill out. We were told all the answers would be on signs throughout the zoo. By the time the bus got to the zoo, I had finished most of the worksheet. :p

In 7th grade, we visited Henry Vilas Zoo on a field trip. I was the only one not laughing when we passed the Somali Wild Ass exhibit. When we got to the flamingos, everyone ran right up to the glass and was all excited. I worked my way to the middle of the group and said: "The lighter colored ones are Chilean Flamingos, and the darker colored ones are American Flamingos". Everyone stopped and looked at me. One kid said (sarcastically): "Thanks for turning this into a learning experience".

I also remember visits to ICF and Stevens Point Herptelogical Society as school field trips, but I don't remember those trips as well.

Oh, almost forgot, before my family moved to AZ, we lived in Colorado, and I believe I went on a preschool trip to the Downtown Aquarium in Denver, and was so upset when we had to go, because I basically wanted to stay there all day.

Back in Middle School, my class got to go to Milwaukee County Zoo, I was actually afraid of the Gorillas there back then, but always loved seeing all the animals back then as well
