The "mystery" where Tierpark Berlin would source its elephant breeding family herd has been resolved. Of course this has happened in close collaboration with the EAZA/EEP African Elephant and took years of planning to come to fruition.
Well based on all the pics I saw of the outdoor facility, it looks FAR too small to accommodate growing family herds not to mention the bland flat terrain with not much visible erinchment features. The long narrow corridor for as the bull yard also seems way too restrictive. I hope they get to expand and modernize the barn too should space allowing it. But according to several Instagram comments from the zoo, they said plans for returning elephants are up in the air due to a 3-year period of the outdoor enclosure makeover and extension, and their slated 2029 completion, and therefore can't mention anything just yet as any changes can spring up within that time period. I really for elephants can still be continued to housed there. The "mystery" where Tierpark Berlin would source its elephant breeding family herd has been resolved. Bergzoo Halle will now go on a trajectory to renovate its elephant housing and breeding facility. I look forward to the time in the next 3-4 years that a state of the art modernised facility will be a feature of the new Bergzoo!
What you are talking about is the present day situation at Bergzoo Halle with regards. to elephants. The critical waypoint (weighting) has been that in the present constellation there were 2 reproductive cows within the elephant herd. For that kind of social grouping and a herd set up for further growth there will admittedly be no place in Bergzoo Halle now (and well into the future).Well based on all the pics I saw of the outdoor facility, it looks FAR too small to accommodate growing family herds not to mention the bland flat terrain with not much visible erinchment features.
