Zoo Hodonín Zoo Hodonín news

Last year the Chestnut-eared aracari's bred for the first time at Hodonin. This year the pair laid a clutch of 4 eggs in Mid-June and in July 2 of the eggs hatched. At the end of August both left the nest - 2 males.

Does anyone know the name and origins of Hodonins current jaguar/s?

Male Tito (black, 9) came from Sankt Petersburg in Russia
Female Grácie (yellow, 12) came from Saarbrücken in Germany

BTW
The zoo has a young female white tiger circa 2 - 3 months old. The animal was recently seized by custom officers due to complete lack of legal documents. The ministry placed it temporary in Hodonin zoo but they dont have space for it once it grows. So they search for a permanent holder (should have zoo licence). Is in good shape, seems healthy and show no big deformations like crossed eyes. If anybody is interested...

Not lemurs. But King colobus. A 2-years old male from Jihlava. And young female should arrive from Vienna Schönbrunn soon.

The white tiger was sent to a private rescue station in Maßweiler/Germany.

A 15-years old male collared mangabey arrived from Münster last month. Female for him is expected to come any day now.

Nice new species in Czech zoos.

The zoo handed over 9 Lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni) hatched at the colony in zoo´s aviary this spring to organisation Green Balkans. They will be prepaired for reintroduction into Bulgarian nature in their centrum in Stara Zagora.

Lesser Kestrel distribution range significantly contracted in 20th centrury in Europe and it got extirped both in Bulgaria (and Czechia and some other countries). Bulgaria decided to re-establish this species by releases of captive-bred birds and succeeded - this species breeds again in the wild since year 2020 there. 3 Czech zoos joined the program and supply their chicks, Hodonin seems to be the most prolific one.

A white-handed gibbon born on 4th of February. It´s got dark-colored fur like its mother.

A red-footed tortoise hatched at the end of February.

Hodonin keeps this species since 2021 but the tortoises are kept back stage and are only visible during contact programs.

The zoo has united all its chimpansees into a single group few days ago. That led to a lot of aggression and noise but so far no bigger injury.

Hodonin keeps following chimpansees:
- 1,0 Fáben born 1979 somewhere in Sweden (had lived in many zoos already - Leipzig, Bratislava, Bojnice, Brno) - habitualy unable to breed
- 0,1 Gina born ca 1979 (ex-circus animal from Hungary, lived in Plzen, Brno)
- 0,1 Maryša born 1995 in Poland (lived in Plzen, Brno)
- 0,1 Tea born 2001 in Liberec
- 0,1 Judy born 2001 in Liberec

The zoo plans to build new entrance building and reconstruct surrounding areas. This will lead to temporary closure of the whole zoo for visitors from ca October 2023 till spring 2024.

Zoo Hodonín čekají změny za desítky milionů, bude ale dočasně uzavřená
The zoo has started building a new entry complex with modern turnstiles that will also advertise their new logo in late 2023. A temporary entrance has been created nearer the parking lot at the zoo. Contrary to earlier reports by zoo management the zoo will remain open for the duration of the project. Zoo management envisages opening of the new complex by summer this year (2024).

The new entry complex will be the start for an age of renewal for the zoo brought forward in part by the recent tornado that destroyed the old Aquarium building (its demolotion should be completed during 2024) and building of a new wild dog exhibit (also partially damaged by the tornado) and new Aquarium building is previewed to start sometime during 2024. Already done are photovoltaic solar panels installed over the zoo operations and educational center.

Hodonin City Council - as founder of the zoo - has approved the new Hodonín Zoo development concept plan. In future, zones for Africa, South America and Australia would be created and follow along 4 different and successive stages project phase and 6 new buildings for completion by 2028. Other projects are a new children's playground and a development zone for future work. The changes will also include a new graphic identity, including the zoo logo.

What happened to their other male Sherley (wildborn in Guinea in 1988 - purebred P.t. verus)?
Male Faben is a hybrid chimpanzee with only F Judy a confirmed P.t. verus and all other females all unknown (according to the 2014 EEP Chimpanzee studbook).

What happened to their other male Sherley (wildborn in Guinea in 1988 - purebred P.t. verus)?
Sold to China - into some new private zoo in Guangzhou (belonging to Chimelong group). Maybe some of Chinese forum members could identify that place better.

To recap his fate.

Sherley came with falsified CITES papers and was thus illegal animal (his import papers stated he was born in a zoo in Conacry - but that zoo doesnt exist as was realised only years later). He was imported by some Izraeli businessman that moved into Czech republic - he was a hand-reared baby that lived with his family as a pet. Then he was sold to Ludvík Berousek - a member of traditional circus family and some people might recognize his name as he was prosecuted for breeding and butchering tigers for parts to be sold to Vietnamese "Chinese traditional medicine" market recently. Berousek rented Sherley for good money to events, parties, commercials etc. When he was 7 (year 2005), Czech authorities finaly found out his papers are forged (they asked the issuing authority in Guinea to verify) and Berousek was prohibited to use him in for-profit activities anymore. Berousek placed him on loan to Zoo Hodonin in 2007. The zoo tried to incorporate him with other chimps but he was too humanised. After long process he could be united with Tea and Judy at least. In year 2016, Berousek got an offer from China and sold him there. Zoo Hodonin tried to stop this transfer but couldn´t because it didn´t have ownership of him. The sale and transport was mediated and organised by Dana Franková a founder of Zoopark Zajezd. Last I heard Sherley was kept in solitary confinement in China because he couldnt be integrated with other chimps there due to his upbringing.

Don´t you mean shelter for domestic dogs?

Yes, it seems like translation mistake.

Hodonin zoo runs its own dog shelter. The shelter´s got demolished by tornado and currently the zoo constructs a new one (for 1,5 mio euro) with capacity of 31 dog kennels. (BTW several other Czech zoos own shelters that accept and rehome homeless dogs, cats and other pets.)

Here is excerpt from annual report of zoo Hodonin (year 2019):
D o g S h e l t e r
In 2019, we accepted 231 dogs and another eleven were born
within our premises. 67 of them were returned to their owners
and 178 found a new home. One of our dogs died on collaps
during hot summer days and we were forced to put down one puppy
because of serious congenital defect.
