Zoologická Zahrada Jihlava ZOO Jihlava news

Reticulated giraffe.
Well great to learn ..., I thought he was. Dvur Kralove had been without a good bull for their reticulated giraffe herd for some time. I assume that bull Paul will be the new breeding bull they have been after ....

Has anyone seen paca and rakali recently?
Yes, both. I visited the zoo last month, the paca was active around 11:15, although when I visited in February, I saw it already at 9:30. Apparently, it can be seen only when it's being fed, otherwise it's hiding behind the logs. The rakali can be seen usually during the whole day, there were at least 3 individuals during my last visit.

Paca in jihlava is sort of mystical being for me - I´m yet to see it (but they are there, some other visitors had luck and could take pics).

Racali is kept in reverse-day exhibit so while it´s easy to see it´s hard to make pics.

Thank you, do you know which is the exact paca's feeding time? Do Garnett galagoos have lights on at some hour?

Unfortunately no. As I've said, it was 9:30 in February, but during my March trip it was a little later. If you really want to see it, I would try coming back to it during the day, the zoo is quite small so it is possible.
And that's something I don't know for certain, but I guess not...? But I don't know it for sure.

I plan to visit in June. My question is how much time I need to see the whole zoo and if there are any recommendations of when/how to see the rarities (mammals)? Thanks :)

I usually plan with 2-3 hours, this zoo is tiny. 2 hours if i want to see the whole zoo once in calm tempo. More if I want to return several times for some hard to see species. Some other locals should help you with best times to see their rarities. I just know the blue duikers are showy around 16:00.

In other news, the planned transport of giraffe bull Paul is temporary stopped (one of measures done by Dvur due to hoof and mouth desease).

Also kowaris have a 3-months old litter - but they are kept backstage.

The only on-show kowari is a skeleton in the carnivore house... Though seeing their former enclosure in the Australian House it may be a good thing.

The kowari is on show, just the mother and the litters are currently being kept in the backstage... But yeah, their exhibit really isn't the best, although it used to be much worse.

The "new" exhibits for cats are already occupied, but the visitors are unable to come to see the animals yet.
There will be bharals in the big aviary that was formerly occupied by eagles.
There is now a pair Southern Bolivian night monkeys on show in the same exhibit as the lowland paca.
The black lemurs are temporarily kept off show.
