Zoo Leipzig Zoo Leipzig news 2015

A second Lesser flamingo and three Lesser whistling ducks hatched. A Vietnamese small flying fox and several Blue spiny lizards were born.

South African ostrich, Tammar wallabys and South American coati left the collection.

The zoo is expecting a breeding group of Black-and-gold howler monkeys from Edinburgh.

@BjoernN: Do you know why they gave up keeping Ostriches? If I remember correctly, they have had at least one breeding success and the birds fit perfectly to the Kiwara Savannah.

The Ostriches will come back later after the construction of the new Black rhino enclosure.

Fingers crossed either North African or more fitting Somali ostrich instead. Perhaps the honorable Prof.Dr. Junhold and the curatorial staff may have a hand in!??

Female Southwest African lion LUENA (16) has been put to sleep. She suffered from cancer.

6th Lesser flamingo chick hatched.

The new Monkey Island with Black-and-gold howler monkeys, Bearded emperor tamarins, Golden lion tamarin and a new enclosure for Black-tailed prairie dogs was opened last weekend.

The Kiwara-Kopje including Eastern black rhinoceros, Patas monkeys, Cheetah and Rock hyrax will follow on April 29th.

There were staff members around the new exhibits on Saturday explaining that it was the first day the exhibits had been open - needless to say we saw none of the occupants!

Kiwara-Kopje looked a long way off to my eyes - much of the part-built rockwork was still skeletal.

I agree with you, Maguari. The opening date was officially announced by the zoo itself.
