Zoo Miami Zoo Miami 2008-2010

Malayan and Indochinese are the same.

You're correct, and this brings up a point we had to consider in writing our book. About 10 years ago, all of these particular tigers were called "Indochinese", but now the trend is to call them "Malayan". The most common example of this are the "Siberian" tigers, which are now called "Amur" tigers. Our poor editor had to go through the entire book, making sure all of these instances were consistent.

How about those wild dogs from Africa? What are they -- African wild dogs, African hunting dogs, or Cape hunting dogs? Pumas, cougars, mountain lions, or Florida panthers?

I just said Indochinese because that is what the keeper told me. I did not know Indochinese were the same as Malayan though.

1. Does the Metrozoo Miami every exhibited Leopards (Panthera pardus, not Clouded Leopards or so)?
1a. If yes: Which subspecie and where was their exhibit (close to...)?
1b. If no: Where Leopards in the former Crandon Park Zoo and if yes: Which subspecie(s)?

No Miami Metrozoo has never exhibit Leopards as far as I know. As for Crandon Park, i cannot be truly sure...cant seem to find a studbook for Leopards. I do have a booklet of the old zoo, and there is no mention of a leopard, however they did exhibit Jaguars.

2. I remember that there have been Binturongs in the Asian-River-Life-Area. But they are no longer listed at ISIS. Are there still any specimens in Miami Metrozoo. And if no: Whats happen to them?

According to the studbook, Miami last had Binturong in 1982, Asian River Life did not open until 1990.

3. Are there any Lion-tailed Macaques at the Metrozoo

No

5. Am I right - there are no more loris (birds) in the Wings of Asia Aviary?

I dont know about currently, but for some reason I remember them having at least one species during my visit in 2006?

To all who has answered (specialy to Okapikpr):

Thank you very much, even for the infos about the not asked clouded leopards...:)
So in case of the binturongs I must be mistaken. Well, memories can't be wrong sometimes, sorry...:)

And yes, I'm a "he".

PS: About the tiger-subspecies: According to ISIS, Indochinese tigers (Panthera tigris corbetti) are not the same as Malayan tigers (Panthera tigris jacksoni). But is this seperation really scientificaly proved?

Yes, affirmative. Scientific research into separate genetic structure for Malayan and Indo China Panthera tigris. Hence, the separation into new ssp. and a new ssp.

However, to clarify, is it true that all "indochinese" tigers in the US are indeed Malayan tigers? Or are there some that are ACTUALLY indochinese?

King Cheetah

Does anyone know if Miami still has a king cheetah and if they do what show do they bring it out? I am going next week and foolishly missed the shows the first time I went. Also could someone tell me preciously where the oriental white back vulture located in the zoo. Thanks.

The King Cheetah is usually (but not always shown) in one of the show's that is held in the zoo's amphitheater.

Made a recent visit to the zoo and took some notes:

*All of the Baird's Tapir have been shipped out. Maguari Stork are currently housed in the yards. This area is part of the land that is scheduled to become an expanded children's area and the new Florida exhibit

*Prevost Squirrel and Golden Pheasant have replaced the old Howler Monkey enclosure in the Asian lobe.

*A camel ride is now located in the children's zoo at the site of the former elephant ride.

*A lone Storm's Stork male is housed in the Wings of Asia - one of 4 in the US, no females left (according to zoo sign)

*A small reptile collection is kept in a room named "Toadstool" in the Children's Zoo.

Where have the Baird's tapir been shipped out to?

No possibility to import further Storm's storks from the zoo breeding flocks in SE Asia?

Metro zoo has 2 new female orangutans Bonnie and Mango( I forgot where they came from) and a new male Pygmy Hippo named Pogo from the National Zoo. It is assumed he will breed with Kelsey, who is one of the zoo's 2 female pygmy hippos. Honey is very old so she would not be bred.

I believe Bonnie is also from the National Zoo

Did'nt realize Pogo had already moved, weher e is the National Zoo female off to, Lowry Park?

The Bonnie at miami metro zoo is from Audubon Zoo and i learned Mango is from OKC Zoo. They will eventually join Jasper, the zoo's resident male orangutan. National Zoo's female pygmy hippo Agnes is going to a zoo in California. I'm not sure which one

I stil don't understand why the jaguar exhibit is temporarily closed. And by the way, I wonder when the arapaimas are supposed to be added.
