Zoo Miami Zoo Miami News 2021

That’s interesting and very nice news! I thought anoas were being phased out, are they not?
Anoa are an interesting case. There are not that many left in AZA collections, and a lot of those that are left are older individuals. They are a focal species of ACT Indonesia and a favorite of the AC/GC TAG chair, and there has been a push for the past several years for more institutions to take them on, but that doesn’t really seem to have gone anywhere. They are plentiful in the private sector, so there is a source for facilities to bring them in. This birth is promising news that things might actually be moving forward for the program. I know the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is looking to go back into the species and wants to display them in their Asian field exhibits.

Sumatran tiger cub suffering from hair loss:

Sumatran Tiger Cub N'dari Undergoes Medical Exam At Zoo Miami

N’dari, a 10-month old Sumatran tiger cub, was immobilized so the Animal Health team could give her a thorough examination while also getting a closer look at some small areas of hair loss.

The medical experts performed a series of tests that will hopefully lead to more information about the hair loss and minor skin lesions that may be associated with allergies or other skin diseases.

N’dari’s exam also including a series of radiographs, blood collection, an ultrasound and general eye and dental exams.

Weighing in at just over 81 pounds, N’dari, short of the minor skin issues and some dental anomalies, appeared to be in generally good health. However, results from several tests administered on Friday will provide the team with more definitive and detailed information from which they can make more accurate conclusions, according to Zoo Miami Communications Director Ron Magill.

I saw that the zoo still has Giant Eland (might be the very last AZA holder), but do they still have the male Gaur? I saw that they have the female, but haven't seen their male Gaur anywhere recently on social media. Maybe he was relocated to the Bronx or Omaha? I'm possibly thinking about a Spring Break trip.

Zoo Miami only has one gaur now (the female). An unfortunate phase-out for the zoo and the species future in AZA.
