The zoo is holding a contest to name their female tiger cub born on September 6th. The name options are:
- Cahya (Kai-ah): "Light in Darkness" in Indonesian.
- Kirana (Kee-rah-nah): "Beautiful Sunbeam" in Indonesian.
- Tiga (Tee-gah): "Three" in Indonesian, symbolizing her as our third cub.
- Netra (Neh-tra): "Vision" in Indonesian.
- Lani (lah-nee): "Heaven; Sky" in Filipino, a tribute to her parents Leeloo and Berani.

Babirusa birth (a first for Zoo Miami):

Zoo Miami welcomes birth of "bizarre" babirusa - CBS Miami

For the first time in its history, an endangered babirusa has been born at Zoo Miami.

According to the zoo, it was the first baby for nearly five-year-old Maggie, who came from the St. Louis Zoo, and Harry, a five-year-old male from the Audobon Zoo. The sex of the newborn is still undetermined as it remains isolated with its mother in a secluded holding area.

For the first time since 1998, sloth bears have been born at Zoo Miami.

Kematee, a four-year-old sloth bear, gave birth to two female cubs on December 4th. These were the first births for Kematee, who arrived at the zoo from the Philadelphia Zoo in 2021. The bear sloths' father is "Hank," who is 11 years old, arrived at Zoo Miami in 2016 from the National Zoo in Washington D.C. where he was born.
 
some notes from my visit today

  • they have updated signage in Amazon and Beyond
  • the former New Guinea Singing Dog exhibit is now a "vacation" home for Radiated and Redfoot Tortoise, though I only saw a single sulcata
  • they have at least 1 Texas Horned Lizard on display now with a sign showcasing the partnership with San Antonio Zoo
  • The former South American Bushmaster habitat is now home to a 2nd Brazilian Lancehead
  • in exciting news, the Cuban Racer is back on display! though I was amazed that they were cohabitating it with the curlyhair Tarantula though, never seen any zoo cohab a tarantula before!
  • did the zoo get another Giant River Otter? as they had 3 on display today and previously I had only ever seen 2
  • the wolf fish is still off display, I worry it might be gone now.
  • the dart frog enclosure next to the false water cobra is now signed for Aruba Island Rattlesnake, with a sign saying coming soon
  • the former Somali Wild Ass/Grevy's Zebra habitat is now a 2nd Okapi/Yellow-Backed Duiker habitat
  • the Former Black-Necked Stork habitat now has a pair of Black-Clowned Cranes
  • there was tarp blocking the Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur habitat
  • the Siamang/White-Cheeked Gibbons were still off display and the moat in their habitat was drained.
  • I think the zoo is down to a single Arabian Oryx sadly
  • the Nyala were off exhibit today for some reason
  • the Aviary is still blocked off, though you can still see some birds flying around from the outside.
  • only one Sloth Bear was out today, sadly no keeper was around to ask about the cubs.
  • according to the keeper there, they do plan to breed their orangutans in a few years when they reach 12yrs of age.
  • The Banteng Calf and three Giant Eland calfs have grown so much already!
  • the monorail track has been almost completely torn down now
  • lastly, the Sumatran Tiger cub was on exhibit on its own, its too soon to separate from the mom right?

I almost forgot, the the mutispecies habitat in Amazon and Beyond that used to hold Linneaus' Two-Toed Sloth, Southern Tamandua, Brazilian Prehensile-Tailed Porcupine, and Red-Rumped Agouti now only has the sloths and a massive male Rhinoceros Iguana

They have four in total - three of which are siblings, and their mother.

Indeed, she's only five months of age. I assume she probably was with mum, Lealoo, but Lealoo was just out of view somewhere.

Sumatran tiger cubs are weaned at around six months, but are usually kept with their mothers for a minimum of 12-18 months in zoos.
 
I realized I forgot to mention a few things when I was going through my photos

  • A new Addax calf must of been born recently, I don't believe it has been mentioned yet, I can't imagine this calf was over a month or 2 old
  • the empty exhibit that was signed as a 2nd Asian Small-Clawed Otter exhibit before in Asian River Life now holds Painted Terrapins
  • The Mexican Cantil were off display
 
On March 17th, the zoo announced that they started construction on a new exhibit for their ambassador cheetahs which will be in the Sami Family Amphitheater area.

On March 18th, it was reported that the (0.1) generic giraffe that was born on December 15th passed away on March 17th after breaking its neck.

Hi everybody. Does anybody have any photo's of Miami's gorilla and orang-utan's enclosures? I have a peak in the gallery but couldn't find anything. Thanks :)

I had noticed only 1 Dhole on my last 2 visits but since the zoo didn't mention the passing of the other ones I assumed they were either inside or hiding....a shame, it really seems like Dholes will soon be gone from the US unless an import happens.

Unfortunate to see two US dhole holders getting out of the species in the span of a week. Anything can happen, but based on current trends I'm highly doubtful the zoo intends on bringing in more individuals.

Well that was a gut punch. I was planning to go there again soon with the dholes being my main species to see (saw them twice before). I did not know there were issues with the dholes. This hurts.
