A friend sent me a copy of an article which was in the Kidderminster Shuttle, a newspaper. The article is about a man, a Mr Harvey who has been trying to find the name of a little girl who fell into the the Tiger enclosure at Dudley zoo , just after it opened in 1937. Two things immediately came into my mind,
First...I always considered myself to be pretty good as far as Dudley zoo history, and yet such a story, I have never heard of.
Second...checked the date ,no,it isn't April 1st.
Anyway, the story, Mr Harvey 's mother (who was 12 years old) was on a day trip with her parents to the zoo. Whilst picnicking near the Tiger enclosure, there was a commotion, his mother ran to the enclosure, to see a little girl falling down the slope of the enclosure and landing on a ledge, next to a Tiger cub.His mother thought at the time, that the girl had sqeezed through the railings (the enclosure did indeed have bars along the top of the enclosure in those days). Her father took a photo of the incident (which unfortunately won't re-copy). A group of men (keepers?) Formed a human chain and pulled the little girl to safety. Mr Harvey said that he had contacted both Dudley zoo and Dudley Museum about the incident, but neither had anything in their records.
So what are we to make of this story, does anyone have anything to add?,or is it a hoax?
Do any members have their own zoo mysteries??
