Zoo Negara Zoo Negara Leopard Subspecies

Hello. I've done some searching online to try find out what subspecies of leopard zoo negara houses but was unsuccessful. Any help would be awesome.

Hi, the last time I went there was this March, and I saw 2 melanistic leopards. I don't know which subspecies, but I can provide photos. Will this be helpful to you?

Wikipedia says "Indian Leopard", but I don't know the citation.

It's all good. I'm not familiar enough with most my leopard subspecies. I'll just keep it listed as "leopard" on my zoo life list.
Thank you mate!

It would be good to find out ... though, honestly!

I personally tend to think ....: Either melanistic is a hybrid or possibly one of the subspecies with high incidence of melanism. However, I really do not think so.

BTW: It would be good to elucidate the genetics and status of many a leopard in Southern and SE Asian zoos.....

My thought is its either gonna be an Indian or Indochinese. If they're the result of local rescues then it'll be Indochinese but I can't find anything on this.

Since most Indochinese leopards in the Malay Peninsula are melanistic, the melanistic leopards at Negara Zoo are likely to belong to the local subspecies. Of course, they could also be Zoomix individuals, so the quickest way to confirm would be to ask the zoo directly.

Thanks for your comments and the feature article. I actually did allude to this possibility as the same phenomenon is true of Jawan leopard where the incidence of melanism is quite dominant in the in situ populations of Jawan leopard.

I would really like/love all zoos in the region to subspeciate their leopards and other.felid species to original capture location and/or by genetic testing to subspecific levels.

I think it's safe to assume they house indochinese leopards but I'll see if I can send an email and hope for an answer.

When I was to SE Asia last year in September only zoo that claim for sure that they have Indochinese leopards was KKO zoo and Chiang Mai Night safari and I think that pair from Chiang Mai Night safari had cubs recently.

In Zoo Negara they said to me that they have Indochinese leopards via email but staff said that they are hybrids so I don't think so that they are WC or pure Indochinese leopards. Also in Taiping zoo they have several melanistic leopards but staff said that all of them are hybrids.

They used to have regular coated Indian Leopards but those are long gone which is where Wikipedia probably got that from. Apoh is most likely an indochinese or a hybrid.
