In the bright new Reptile-house at Neuwied Zoo the first young have hatched : 3 Black and White tejus. This species is kept at a number of European collections but breeding-results are quite rare.

Some nice births and hatchlings at Zoo Neuwied :
4 Barbary sheep
2 Emus
X European wild cats - with this species Neuwied co-operate in the re-introduction programm.

Two new antelope species arrived, three Situnga and two male Blue Wildebeest. They share the enclosure with Ancole Cattle and Ostriches.

This zoo has the Hall of South American animals opening soon, with 13 exhibits and more than 20 species on display. It is apparently the largest project in the history of the zoo but Neuwied has a very low profile here on ZooChat. Has anyone visited recently? In the book Zooming in on Europe's Zoos, which provides an excellent overview of more than 120 facilities, the zoo is listed as having 310,000 annual visitors, few indoor exhibits, but what appears to be a huge walk-through enclosure with "80 Kangaroos, 40 Wallabies and 10 Emus". Does anyone know much about the upcoming Hall of South American animals?

(I have tentative plans to visit this zoo next summer)

Coincidentally I saw a Facebook post about this just the other day. There's more info here: Zoo Neuwied - Willkommen im ZOO NEUWIED

Main attractions are tapir, anteater and a nocturnal section. A few nice smaller species in there - Kinkajou, Greater Cavy and Chacoan Mara are among the species mentioned in the writeup on the link.

The kangaroo exhibit is not walkthrough, but otherwise you are correct, there is about 150 kangaroos in 2 species.

Visited this zoo recently.
It's an odd mix of exhibits and species at this zoo.
There are the wonderfull (and quiet new) Exotarium and South America House, but also some less nice exhibits. Overall it's a zoo that offers enough space for most animals, but you can clearly see that most exhibits were combined to form one bigger exhibit. So nice improvements but a bit weird and cage-like at times. For disabled or people with small children or a pram, it is impossible to see parts of the zoo. Some paths are so steep that you will have had a good workout once you finished your tour around the zoo.
There is one area in development where the crane species they have (sarus & paradise) will be housed in the future.
Animal wise there are some nice species like: southern tamandua, lowland paca, brown spider monkey, grey-bellied night monkey, Guira cuckoo, defassa waterbuck, big group of eastern grey kangaroo, european badger, european wildcat, Siberian weasel, brown eared pheasant, Pallas cat and a nice array of species in the exotarium. Not all the named species I have seen myself, it was a very cold day and many animals stayed inside or were sleeping somewhere I couldn't see them. But also some enclosures were only housing domesticated chickens, I like chickens, but I would like to see more wild-typed animals in a zoo. But nevertheless the chickens look nice and the watusi are also great to see.

2 babies born in the African section:

A Watusi born in Easter and 2 weeks ago a female Defassa's Waterbuck. This is only the second birth the zoo has had with the waterbuck.

4 Amboina Sail-Finned Lizards hatched in May. Neuwied is the only zoo in Germany holding this species.

At the moment the European Sulpher-crested cockatoo-population is being investigated to find out which sub-species are kept at which places. From the threatened Timor sulpher-crested cockatoo ( Cacatua sulphurea parvula )only 5 European collection are known to keep the subspecies and the Zoo of Neuwied was 2019 and 2020 so lucky to breed the species twice and 3 young have been raised. Hopefully more animals can be found in Europe to build up a stable population of this ( and the other 5 ) subspecies.

In August the zoo received a male Chameleon forest dragon (Gonocephalus chamaeleontinus).

In March a male Freckled monitor (Varanus tristis orientalis) was introduced to the 4 females and with success! At the end of August 16 eggs hatched, a zoo first breeding for Zoo Neuwied. According to ZTL this species is only kept in 4 zoos in Europe.

In September 2 male and 1 female Barbary lion (Panthera leo leo) were born.

Since November the Green keel-bellied lizards (Gastropholis prasina) are on display, previously they were kept behind the scenes where they also bred.
