We visited the zoo today an just thought we would give a bit of info from the visit. We could only see five of the giraffes today, when six are listed as being at the zoo we visited a few weeks ago and there were six. We also only saw three out of the four Cheetahs. Does anybody know if the giraffe or cheetah has been moved on?
Also some of the chimps were not display today we didnt see Cleo, or baby Tina. The Bush dogs were mating today so we may have baby bushdog soon. The Zebra have been moved into a paddock further back and are hardly visibly the Oryx have been moved into the paddock that the zebra were in. Both Tigers were out in the enclosure today both are still very nervous and were hiding quite a lot aswell as going inside the viewing window is now open for you to see inside but you cannot get close as there are two potted plants and rope in the way.

According to Chester's ISIS report they hold 0.4 hybrid giraffes and 1.0 Rothschild's giraffe. The female Rothschild's is no longer listed. Dont know about the cheetahs other than females should be coming later this year.

Both the cheetahs and chimps have off-show areas so it's probable that they were in there.

The zebra and oryx often use that paddock arrangement, especially in the summer when the ground is harder for the oryx.

The tiger window has been open for a while, but it seems that the stand-off barrier has only recently been added.

slightly off topic but can anybody recomend a camera for somebody starting out taking animal photography? Bearing in mind where on a budget. Also has anybody any news on the cheetahs as read in a previous thread that they had been fighting may this be why only three were on show?

The Cheetahs have off-show areas in the large green building. It' most likley that one was in there. I was there today and saw none on one visit and two later on. Just because you can't see them, doesn't mean they have been taken off-show.

On a sidenote about the Cheetah, the new maps say that females will be arriving in the summer.

I'll add some other notes from today as they don't really deserve a new thread:
- Porcupines, Lion Tailed Macaques and Mandrills were mating
- A large team meeting was happening in the elephant house (possibly Birma related?)
- Bongo will be one of the animals going into the Heart of Africa Exhibit (alongside the publicised Chimps, Gorillas and Okapi)

forgot to mention the other day that there is no longer acess to miniture monkeys due to construction of the miniture golf course.

really, sorry i must have missed that. how do you get the tamarin exibit? Also how many Okapi are there at chester is there just the one now? Has the male gone back to its original zoo?

You can get to the Tamarin exhibit by walking along the outdoor monkey islands and the Pied Tamarin house can still be seen.

I think there are 2 Okapi at the moment

thanks for that will have to have a look next time we visit i always forget about minature monkeys as its been crowded around bat bridge. forget to mention aswell that somebody was taking photographs with a flash!!! in the twillight zone on saturday.

Access to the pied tamarins is opposite the pelican enclosure. They can be seen in the house (if you are lucky)

Marwell's male okapi went back last autumn, but they are sending a different male for this year. So should be 1.1 at the moment at Chester, and then 2.1 for 6 months.

No there's no acsess to the Marmosets & Lion Tamarins at all, another reason to despise the mini golf course.

Good to see the Bongos are moving to Heart Of Africa, im hopeful that the Buffalo will too.
