Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens Zoo News 2013

I knew Cal Rock Concrete Environments was doing the concrete theming for Rainforest of the Americas, so I went on their Facebook page and there they have lots of photos of what they are doing for the zoo. They show photos of the 30 ft tall strangler fig that will allow guests to walk under, Harpy Eagle and Oropendola nests that will allow kids to play in, 400 roots for some of the exhibits (mentions 15 roots mangrove roots made for piranha exhibit), leaf for a leaf cutter ant sculpture, and some of the 14 Lily Pads that will make a Lily Pad bridge by the stilt house. They also mention that there will be a total of 18 exhibits in Rainforest of the Americas.

Mario, thanks for sharing your latest post. The information and photos are fantastic. The best behind-the-scenes glimpse of the Rainforest project yet!

Thanks for the link! I also noticed in the photos that the bottom of the pool was painted a tan/beige color, which is better than the blue it had.

The June 25th Zoo Commission Meeting minutes have been posted.
Link: http://lazoo.org/about/commission/minutes/June2013Minutes.pdf

Highlights:
-Rainforests of the Americas is 82% complete, and completion date has been moved to August 19, 2013.
-The zoo will be receiving several animals for breeding, including male Giant Otter, Jaguar breeding pair once new exhibit is completed, and male Maned Wolf.
-Adhama the hippo's arrival is also mentioned.
-GLAZA raised $4 million this past fiscal year. One of the best fundraising years in the zoo's history.
-GLAZA's Beastly Ball raised over $1 million alone!
-One male chimp has been introduced to the maternal group.
-USDA has lessened its permitting restrictions for hoofstock.
-Over 40,000 visitors attended the Nintendo Donkey Kong promotion event.
-Mention of Jason Jacobs leaving the zoo to become Zoo Director at Reid Park Zoo.

I don't know, the zoo didn't mention another planned opening day. Labor day weekend could be a possible day considering the completion date is projected to be August 19, but I think that is still cutting it close considering it normally takes about a month to get the animals acclimated to their exhibits. I'll let you know as soon as I find out what the planned opening day is.

Regardless, opening day is right around the corner. At last!

There haven't been any news other than the zoo plans to get new lions.

@Blackduiker: Yes, I've been more excited for this exhibit than the last two combined!

I have no idea, all information I know is from the zoo commission meeting minutes, and all it mentions is that they plan to bring in new lions.

Seems like things have been very quiet regarding the bird show area. i swear it was almost 6 months ago that construction looked well along. Anybody heard anything?
