San Diego Zoo Zoo News 2013

That is exactly why I'm shocked. The most recent Felid TAG Regional Collection Plan had the Amur Leopard as the only leopard species recommended. But I guess as San Diego is planning on exhibiting Amur Leopard as well elsewhere in the zoo, why not?

Perhaps this is the direction of their new director? I am shocked as well, but with a new director, I'm sure he's been briefed on plans and provides input. I'm not sure how stable these plans are after a management change, but San Diego's in-house team seems to be very influenced by their management.

The Zoo's new director, although certainly well-qualified and who presumably eventually will be influential, is actually about three tiers below the top management level at San Diego Zoo Global. The previous zoo director had very little input (and even less expertise) in collection planning.

I honestly don't see the importance of exhibiting African leopards, given the dire shortage of space for endangered Asian leopard subspecies. And in any case, the chances of importation of a new line of Africa leopards seems unlikely, but that would probably be the only way to guarantee subspecific "purity," as most non-Amur or Persian leopards in The US are of mixed or uncertain origin.

It would be the board and then the President of San Diego Zoo Global above the director correct? I'm really unfamiliar with how the organization works at the top level. I'm sure most San Diegans are the same.

I'll try and upload photos of what's in the sociable weaver aviary as of June. Tinkerbirds are in there.

Multi-level bureaucracy and exhibit design - what could possibly go wrong?

You get the same cable fence that they've had in the last three exhibits and a simple moat with grass and rockwork in the back according to the perspective in the gallery. Reminds me of horn and hoof mesa.

This is the former Dog and Cat Canyon. As for what's living in their now, I'd better let a local field that one.

Come on locals! I'm looking at the map now, and I'm guessing Dog and Cat Canyon might be the bit along from Africa Rocks? Maybe where the Warthogs are?

And where is the new Madagascar area to be?

In some of the earlier info on the new Africa Rocks it seemed like the Madagascar section is going to be up the hill from Hunte Amphitheater

So then the African Forest Canopy would be located between Madagascar and Africa Rocks?

I think that they'll probably do it in sections like that, Rady Falls will probably be the last area, then madagascar, then african canopy, then i assume it'll be a kind of savanna/desert area with the watering hole exhibit of the baboons and warthog, then the kopje and the african shores exhibit (supposed penguins)……this is what I'm guessing i could be 100% wrong but this is what i am picturing it's gonna look like

I took my camera to the zoo today to take pictures of the exhibits on Park Way. I wanted to document the animals in them. I uploaded to the gallery. I was surprised to find that 6 exhibits are empty with a fence in front of them.

There is one male echidna (Eugene) on exhibit now in the exhibit where the royal antelope used to be. But honestly I didn't see him. We have 3 more off exhibit 1 male 2 females. Both females had intestinal troubles and were in the hospital but are doing better. Royal antelope is off exhibit.

It sounds absurd to replace an antelope with an echidna, but then you look up how big a royal antelope and it makes sense!

I hope the royal antelope go back on show. Where were they exhibited? And why aren't the echidna exhibited in the Australian Outback?

Actually they are in the Australian Outback just not the new area. If you continue on front street after the koalas you will come to the common wombat turn left and on the elevated walkway are tree kangaroos then down the stairs is the echidna. I too hope the royal antelope comes back. The keeper I talked to thought we only had the one male left. A baby was born a few years ago but it died.

Ya, that little antelope is cute. They could probably fit him in that cage near the meerkats that has the button quail and purple crowned touraco. Livingstones touraco could go in there as well if they want the bird and antelope to stay together.

Here is from Help Us Build The New Africa Forest Canopy

Multi-level living space: gentle slopes dotted with trees and shrubs for the Amur leopards and a hillside habitat with rocky outcroppings for the snow leopards.

The new habitats will encourage the leopards’ natural behavior and enrich their lives.

Creature comforts, such as heated rocks for napping, deadwood for sratching, and high lookout areas for perching.

Up-close viewing for visitors through glass panels.

A glass-fronted maternity den so guests can watch the mother leopards rearing their cubs.

A camouflaged animal care center nestled between the two exhibits with bedrooms, a keeper work area, a food preparation kitchen, and space for on-site veterinary procedures.

Exhibits will be located near Panda Trek.

I really hope so Ituri.

I wonder if they are going to do this fundraising site for all five habitats that they are claiming they will create?

I wish they would open them up in phases if they are going to raise money in phases, but I think that they are going to open them all at the same time.
