Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium Zoo News 2013

Berani and Dumai are back on exhibit together. Berani is recovering well.
4 scorplings are on exhibit with "Momma Scorpion" in Kid's World.

Jaya has had another cub! It was a bit of a surprise since the keepers couldn't get a clear ultra sound, and saw nothing in her hormones that suggested she was pregnant. Here's hoping that she'll bond with her new cub.
The zoo is also expecting clouded leopards soon as Chai Le is pregnant again. One harbor seal is for sure pregnant, and another one is expected to be carrying a pup as well.

Babies for the zoo

That's a unfortunate. I think San Francisco and Sacramento also have Sumatran tiger moms who have had single cubs but seem to be doing just fine bonding with them.
The staff is getting lots and lots of experience raising cubs by hand. Must be a good time to be a cat keeper there right now. :)

While there are other mothers with younger cubs out there I dont know how much older they are then the newborn and if that would make the mother reject the new one. Plus I dont know how easy it is to get a tiger to accept another cub once they have been raising their own older cub and if things go badly she could chose to kill the new cub which would be a real tragedy, especially since shes a female. The zoo must know though if any new litters are due shortly which they could easily slip her into.

One Little Leopard Cub, Just Nine Days Old

Leopard CU

Good news! A healthy male Clouded Leopard cub was born at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium on the morning of May 1. He is the third litter born to Chai Li and her mate Nah Fun. They are part of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums Species Survival Plan, which manages and maintains a population of this species.

The cub is being bottle-fed and will be hand-reared by zoo staff with extensive experience in the care of these exotic cats. This has produced the best results in terms of health and well-being of newborn cubs. Clouded Leopards are listed as Vulnerable in the wild according to the IUCN, so every one is a precious addition to the population.

The zoo announced earlier today that Homer the sea otter was euthanized after an exam showed serious health issues. Homer was believed to be about 25 years old and was the last sea otter survivor of the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

Glad she had a long life after being rescued from a terrible tragedy that changed the course of her life, along with many other otters and marine animals.
