Chester Zoo Zoo News 29th March 09

does anybody have any ideas on how there going to move the chimps to the new enclosure once heart of africa is completed?

probaby crate training or the more risky method of anaesthesia.

I imagine they'll take the dominant animals first, so they can re-establish themselves and then bring the lower ranked ones as it will be impossible to move all 30-odd at once without some conflict breaking out. (I remember watching an video of the LA zoo using this method on their Orangs - big male first, followed by females)

so you think they would take Dylan & Cleo over first? does anybody have an idea on what the new chimp exibit will be like?

If they are planning to breed pure West African chimps in the future , it could be that not many of the colony would be moved . Does anyone know if their current animals have been tested as has been done at Edinburgh ?

The last I hears was that the whole chimp group will be moving to Heart of Africa. I don't think they have been DNA rested.

when i asked one of the keepers a few weeks ago whether any of the chimps will be moved to another collection she said there are no plans to at the moment and if they were to move them they would move a few together rather than one chimp.
Im Planning on going to the zoo on the 11th of this month so if there is anything you would like me to try and find out please let me know

LeeMac, people were talking about whether they would be moved to the Heart of Africa. Which has already been confirmed that they will all move (As plans are at this moment in time)

You could try and find out if the Kirks dik-dik are ever going to go on display?

Does anybody know whats happening with the bush dog enclosure? last few times we have been it has been empty. Also are they doing anything with the Pudu? ive never saw one at the zoo but bongorob assures me there is one in the enclosure.

I visited on 31st of May and only saw 3 cheetahs - was one of them just hiding?

The two darker coloured cheetahs seemed to be picking on the light coloured one but after watching them for a while we dcided the lighter coloured one was provoking it.

Lots of gasps of terror when quite a small chimp took baby Tina swinging high over the water in the indoor climbing area - eventually her mother got her back - was this likely to be an elder sibling? I uploaded a picture of them although it's not very good.

now you have got the juices flowing rob, anything exciting?

Not at the moment. Unless you are into birds. Most of them have already been announced on the forum now as having arrived at the zoo.

looks like its going to be a busy day, im i write in thinking the tiger keepers will be at the tiger enclosure for two hours? or will it be at a time in that period?

There will be a member of the carnivore team there over that duration they will probably swap and change, however don't be surprised if you can't find one.

I had no trouble fiinding Andy Wolfenden on the last member's day. I was the only person who wanted to speak to him.
