Zoo Ohrada Zoo Ohrada / Zoo Hluboká News

Yes, and they also have a job title - live pest control.
That's acually so smart, Plzeň could do the same thing in the giraffe and rhino stables, if they weren't open.
The cockroach on the sink handler was the last thing I needed to see that day:rolleyes:, and the cloud rats did not enjoy the company of a gargantuan roach as well, I heard one screaming behind the glass...

The head zoologist and vice-director had been on local radio and talked current construction and future plans.

- the new pelican house is almost done, should open in early February.
- the wild horse exhibit under construction will host 0.3 horses (already identified by coordinator) and muntjack deer.
- the new netting over walk-though waterbird exhibits will be again from flexible nylon, just the supporting collumns will be from steel and not wood (the zoo wanted metal mesh aviary but price offers were way over available budget), completion maybe next year
- the raised wooden walkway around flamingos remains closed, will be 1:1 rebuilt in 2025
- the former bear cage from 1950s will stay and get rebuilt into children playground
- the off-show breeding waterfowl house will be completely rebuilt in 2025
- the otter exhibit is in bad shape, will be rebuilt (construction possibly starting 2025)
- the planned bush dog exhibit is still on cards, if evething goes ok (which it almost never does) its construction could start in late 2025
- the otter and bush dog exhibits should be under one roof, that would mean demolition of current pheasantry I guess?

I have not been in Hluboká since October so I'm not aware of what "almost done" means, but I'll probably check it next month and when it's supposed to be opened.

I'm skeptical on the horse and muntjak mix as the space available does not look big enough (to me, but I'm just an enthusiast so I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt.

Where are these new aviaries supposed to be built? Or is it the reconstruction of the waterfowl aviary close to the new horse + pelican area? Or do you mean that the facility is planning on re-netting everything and putting new columns?

I wonder if the flamingo habitat will be built with better materials given the state it was left by the snow...

Nice turnover for those cages, unless they changed the iron bars I don't think that would've been a suitable habitat for anything.

Is this the big white house in the quite big waterfowl aviary close to the owl aviaries (Close to the badger kiosk and sand playground)?

A shame that the otter habitat is in those conditions, I think it's well structured to give the animal(s) a nice array of movement and change, but the glass does look like it's about to burst at any given second.
It would be a shame personally if they remove the pheasantry, I think it's pretty nice and natural-looking, even if a tad small, I'd argue the former wolf paddock is much better for the canines (maybe they'll expand it and the birds will be moved in either existing or backstage aviaries?

I also don´t at all understand why they opted for wild horses. Space available and location (fishpond bank with constant high humidity of air and soil) is unsuitable for the species, imho.

The new netting is for the reconstruction work near the pelican area. Basically, the former large aviary will look almost identical it was before the snow blizzard.

I hate visual of the old bear cage and would prefer to just demolish it asap. It´s not under listed protection or anything. I don´t understand emotional attachment of the staff.

The offshow bird house is inside the inaccessible space between crane aviary and manor/castle.

The otter exhibit is according the podcast in very bad shape and the current otter cubs are tearing it literary appart. They dont mention how exactly will the new otter exhibit look like just that visitors will look under the water surface from a dark place. That would mean the curent path in front of otters gets roofed over, I guess.

The bush dog exhibit will replace the former wolf and lynx paddocks. The zoo wants that visitors walk from otters directly to the bush dogs. But with the aviaries inbetween now, my guess is they will be removed. I like them in their unassuming current form, but I know they are unattractive for visitors so can see they can be easily sacrificed.

Discussion about using the former wolf paddock for something new goes for 10 years, while that space sits empty the whole time. Who knows if bush dogs realy are realised or not. We will see.

If you get to visit again and get to new info, please share it here.

On one hand, I am glad thah ponies and ass will be gone (i am not a fan of common domestic animals occupying "too much space" (especially in small facility like Hluboká), on the other I get doubts about size and also climate (although that never crossed my mind)
I wonder what could be another (and maybe better?) use for that place? Tapirs? (again, maybe a little bit small for them) Pygmy hippo? (would fit as "aquatic" species, but not palearctic theming of most of zoo - similar to tapirs) Some smaller suid or antelope (again, geographic theming)? Cervid? (water deer? musk deer?)

Otter exhibit is quite old, I don´t know if it was reconstructed since its opening (more than twenty years ago) - I suppose it needs reconstruction, whether it is good or bad exhibit

I can think of many species, that would be nice at Hluboka, but only one of them is a ungulate for these area: Tufted deer in combination with red pandas. Imo there would be a bunch of smaller carnivores that would have been a better option for the zoo than the horses (i would have also been comfortable with a new, larger wolverine exhibit)

The raised visitor path around flamingos / pelicans / muntjacs is open again.

What remains closed is area of former swan / waterfowl aviary and the path along pond bank to zoo exit gate (due to constructions works of new shop and food stall).

Zbudovská Blata is the very last location where wild black-tailed godwits breed within Czechia. It lies just few km away from this zoo. Earlier this year, two godwit pairs nested there but both nests were predated. Ornithologists rescued two intact eggs and transfered them into zoo´s incubator. One chick hatched and was placed within group of same-aged pied avocets and reared till fledging with minimal human contact. It got GPS locator and was released in July. Few days ago it already reached protected area Fertő-Hanság in western Hungary.
