This weekend, the zoo´s opened their new pavilion KALAHARI to visitors. It´s a building showing small South African species, building expenses were 0,6 mio euro.
Species on show:
- aardvark (1.1 male from Russia and female from Prague)
- rock hyrax
- suricata
- spiny-tailed lizard
- Cape ground squirrel
- Cape coral snake
- common flat lizard
- yellow-throated plated lizard
- African house snake
- black-necked agama
- 3 species of weaver
- some insects
The last empty enclosure is built for honeybadger, but an import of young 1.1 from Africa is hard and so it may take some time.

This sounds interesting and innovative. It’s a unfair comparison, but it is worth noting that the cost of this is substantially lower than that which I have seen quoted for the building of a new toilet block at Marwell Zoo....
The new Kalahari pavilion sounds great. I love these type of animal houses for small species. Have you any photos or dimensions.

how can you get a honey badger fom Syria
By air cargo? He came in early March when Prague still had daily lines to Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, Gulf countries. Most part of Syria is back to life-as-usual. We have an open embassy in Damascus, getting documents/visa is not a problem.
The new honey badget got a name Sámer, is circa 3 years old.

No further information on the how's and wherefore's that the male ended up in Czech Republic or even how he got to be in captivity in Syria.

Yes it is the first breeding, the baby had to be actually hand raised during the first weeks, but now the mother is taking care for it.
Mother was born in Prague, male came from Russia.
