Zoo Olomouc Zoo Olomouc News

I saw one individual last weekend, seemed quite shy for the time being.

Some announced youngters. All of them grow under parents.

- female binturong cub born in late June
- twin white-headed lemurs born in May
- 2 black stork chicks
- a wisent calb
- 5 bar-headed gooslings
- one black-headed parrot
- 4 blue-fronted Amazons
- 6 little owls - these will be rewilded in coming months

Resident pair of Bearded barbets has bred for the first time. It carved a 1-meter long hole into a trunk of dead tree and that made any direct control of the nest hole basicaly impossible for keepers, they had to wait and hope for the best. A single chick fledged recently and is already on show.

The zoo announced they bred another chick of Southern screamer and it reached age of 3 months. This might be a common species, but Olomouc seems the only local zoo with halfway regular breeding results. Also earlier this year, Olomouc sent viable screamer eggs for adoption to an (infertile) pair in Ostrava where now one male chick grew up too, full sibling of the Olomouc chick.

The city of Olomouc is investing 7 mio euro into its zoo. This sum should finance following projects in 2025-2026:

- education enviromental centre "Loděnka" with integrated saltwater aquarium (one tank or more?)
- new larger restaurant "Pod Věží" built at the place of the current only zoo restaurant (which means the zoo wont have a single decent place to eat during its construction period)
- new administration bulding

The zoo has bred another 2 chicks of Southern screamer during winter and they are now on show.

The female chick bred last year was sent to Walsrode (together with a young male from Plzen).

Two Chinese leopards (1,1) arrived from zoo Liberec yesterday. They are twins born in May 2022 - their parents are Yong (*Karlsruhe) and Jilin (*Hannover). The EEP is so far unable to find new place for them but they grew up and couldn´t stay at Liberec any longer. Olomouc had some spare capacity within its Amur leopard complex and took them in temporarily. But search for a new holder (or two) is continuing.

A new species is on show. A pair of crested quail-doves (Geotrygon versicolor) that has arrived in April from Zürich. They live in an aviary mixed with Schalow's Turaco (Tauraco schalowi).
