Hi, I am a college student in the United States. I am currently studying Environmental Science with a concentration in Wildlife Biology, but am in the process of transferring to a different school to major in Captive Wildlife Care and Education. I plan to create my own zoo with a wildlife rehab/ conservation center in the future. I know that it will take a very long time and a great deal of financial investment, but was wondering if anyone has any other advice for me. I was wondering about what kinds of degrees I might need or that might be advantageous to have, as well as what kind of skills i might need.

Do you have any experience working hands on with exotic animals? I'm currently working at a zoo and hands on experience has done more for me than I could imagine more college classes would. I guess it all depends on what type of species you want to work with, and what your goals truly are.

If you want to be the owner or director, you better study business and management. Even though you may someday hire a business manager, you still need to understand your business and learn how to organize and manage a team.

Thank-you for your replies... The only hands on experience I have with Exotic animals is my regular visits to zoos as well as my volunteer work at a local conservation center. It's also good to know that a business degree would be helpful. I was planning on getting my business degree but was afraid to pay for a degree that I would never use! Thanks again!
