They think the baby is a female ( still not 100 % sure ) and the 2 other females are also looking carefully after the baby. Esp. for female Zola this is very important because she herself is also pregnant and will deliver soon .

5-year old Gorilla-female Kwane arrived from Zoo Heidelbergen.At Zoo Rostock he will live together with leader Assumbo and females Eyenga, Yene and Zola.

That move has now paid off. As an 8 year old he has now fathered two babies with Yene and a second female is pregnant by him also. Assumbo the old silverback was never going to breed and they finally did something to rectify the situation by adding a male young enough that the older male wouldn't object. It seems Assumbo still behaves as if he is the father/protector of the group though.

Zola the gorilla gave birth to a male baby on April 23rd. He was sired by Kwame. Also, a ring-tailed lemur was born on April 12th.

On June 7th, a Wapiti bull was born and days after that, a lechwe was also born.

2 Green Aracaris were born to first time mother Magda at the end of April. This is the second time in the history of Rostock that this species breed.

I have not been in a few years and it seems to me that Rostock has modified the European wisent exhibit since then. I cannot remember anything about hard standing and rocky bits in the enclosure. It does really look rather nice.

For the first time in the zoos history a Western pygmy hippo (Choeropsis liberiensis liberiensis) was born! Nimba gave birth to the calf presumably saturday morning (October 24th) and both are doing well.

At an age of approximately 58 years a Turkey vulture at the Zoo died. It was untill its death the oldest animal at the zoo.

Recently the zoo received two female Cuban hutias (Capromys pilorides) from a zoo in the Czech Republic. Zoo Rostock now has 1,2 Cuban hutias.

On 14 November two polar bears were born in Zoo Rostock. For mother Sizzel and father Akiak it is the first time they have had young. Everything seems to go well with the youngsters, which gives good hope that they will survive their first critical days and weeks.

In June 2 Eurasian Great Grey Owls (Strix nebulosa lapponica) hatched.

On the 14th of June an Eurasian elk (Alces alces alces) was born.

On the 28th of July a male Eastern Atlantic harbour seal (Phoca vitulina vitulina) was born.

Somewhere this year the zoo received 2 European Turtle doves (Streptopelia turtur turtur), which is a new species for Zoo Rostock!

At the beginning of this year atleast 2 Patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) were born.

On the 10th of October a male Wapiti (Cervus canadensis) was born.
