The Galapagos are not C. niger (nor nigra), but rather beckixporteri hybrids. One thing that has been known about the hybridised individuals bred in larger numbers in private collections within the US and also previously in zoos is that it creaties inbreeding depression in the species and hybrids tend to die earlier than pure-bred specimens.


Keep saying, as it continues to be misnomered. It is unfortunate that hybridisation is occuring where breeding either Volcan Wolf becki or Western Santa Cruz porteri would actually make ex situ conservation sense and have purpose (to the argument that zoos matter where Galapagos tortoise species breeding programs are concerned). It is still possible to create pure porteri lineage and perhaps also for becki or another taxon/species in Europe.
 
Sadly 2-year old male Western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) Moyo passed away on the 25th of April. He suffered from abdominal pain and underwent surgery in an animal clinic, where he later passed away due to severe intestinal disease. Moyo was born on the 23rd of April 2020 in Zoo Rostock and was the second gorilla to be born at the zoo.

Recently chicks hatched of both the White-headed ducks (Oxyura leucocephala) and Eurasian Great Grey Owls (Strix nebulosa lapponica).

A few weeks ago atleast 6 Arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) were born.

The zebra's have returned to the zoo, recently 2 male Hartmann's mountain zebras (Equus zebra hartmannae) arrived. According to ZTL one came from Safaripark Sigean and the other from Tierwelt Herberstein.

In June 7 Arctic foxes were born, recently they have been sexed, in total 3 males and 4 females were born.

Recently 12 Ringed teals (Callonetta leucophrys) hatched.

On the 9th of September a Kirk's dik-dik (Madoqua kirkii) was born.

Last week Friday male Goodfellow's Tree-kangaroo (Dendrolagus goodfellowi buergersi) arrived from the now closed Bristol Zoo.

Recently a female Linnaeus' two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus) arrived from Ustí nad Labem, where she was born on the 30th of July 2021. Eventually she will live together with the male Jens in the Darwineum.

The Greater hill mynas (Gracula religiosa intermedia) returned to the zoo last month! Their female was temporarily send to Vogelpark Marlow where they have a Beo Dating Center. Her time there was succesfull and she returned with a 5-year old male from Glad Zoo (Danmark).

Recently 2 Large hairy armadillos (Chaetophractus villosus) were moved to the Südamerika-Haus.

On the 22nd of September a male De Brazza's monkey (Cercopithecus neglectus) was born!

One week ago 2-year old female Western pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis liberiensis) Taya (Nimba X Onong) was send to Krakow Zoo.

Recently the female Kinkajou (Potos flavus) left the Südamerika-Haus, her former enclosure will soon house a new species. The kinkajou will remain in the zoo, but where hasn't been revealed yet.

Recently 2 Burmese Star tortoises (Geochelone platynota) arrived at the Vogel-Reptilien-Haus, this is a new species for Zoo Rostock!

In March female Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) Cantik gave birth to a healthy female.

On the 18th of March 2 Desmarest's hutias (Capromys pilorides) were born, a zoo first breeding for Rostock?

At the end of March female Goodfellow's Tree-kangaroo (Dendrolagus goodfellowi buergersi) Kopi arrived from Zoo Krefeld. This is part of a partner swap between 3 zoos (Krefeld, Rostock and Frankfurt) to create 3 new breeding pairs!
