The African Elephant Cow"Sara" passed away, probably aged 51.She has lived at Rostock since 1964 and was the last elephant at this zoo. And she will be the last one-there are no plans to keep elephants again in the future.
 
0.1 Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo arrived from Krefeld this week. Rostock now become the 8th European holder for this species
 
Echidna hatched at Rostock Zoo in february and beeing handreared after the death of the dam since april...

Exciting news indeed - fingers crossed the puggle survives.
 
Very good news! What is the situation with echidnas in Europe - Zootierliste doesn't show a large number of holders at all, and it looks like the Australian/non-subspecies are doomed. Are the New Guinea Echidnas (which is what Rostock has) all destined from very recent (Czech?) imports? Or are these older remnants?

Yep, all the NG Echidnas knocking around Europe - barring the RSCC ones, which I think were a seperate and later import - came into Czech Republic through animal dealers a year or two ago.

Well this birth is even more excellent then - is it the first from this batch (or ever in Europe)? It would be great to have this (and other) New Guinean species established in captivity.

It is certainly a European first breeding for the New Guinean subspecies; Shortbeaked Echidna of no known subspecies have bred previously at Frankfurt, Rotterdam and Saarbrücken.
 
Only one successful birth took place in Saarbrücken in 1995. This is the second echidna in europa, that has been reared successfully *fingers crossed*

the Saarbrücken one was reared to adulthood?

thanks. There have been a number of hatchings at zoos in the US and Europe over the last century but very few have been successfully reared.

Breeding has been getting better in Australia over the last few years, so hopefully things can improve from now on in terms of long-term and continuous success.

We can but hope; I would love echidna to get a bit more established in captive collections over here. I seem to recall the key is believed to be keeping them together in decent numbers.

zootierliste is pretty accurate in that ;). The ones listed without subspecies are probably from the Australian mainland (but from where exactly...)
