Zoo trips; any Suggestions?

I recently went on a bit of a zoo tour to the Netherlands, visiting Apenhuel, Burgers’ and Artis in three days. The trip worked well as the zoos were relatively close and sufficiently different from one another, Apenhuel being largely primates, Burgers’ a huge zoo with everything done on a large scale and Artis being a historic city zoo. I wondered if anyone could recommend any other trips in Europe that would enable me to cover around three zoos in three or four days?

I did Cologne myself in 2007 and will be going there again this summer. Cologne is a lovely city and there are several very good zoos that can be reach easily by train within an hour:

Cologne Zoo
Duisburg Zoo
Dortmund Zoo
Wuppertal Zoo
Krefelder Zoo
ZOOM Erlebniswelt
+ several smaller zoos and aquaria

It is also possible to get to GaiaPark or Frankfurt Zoo in a day and back.

Thanks for the reply. I shall do some research into the zoos you’ve mentioned.

There are many possibilities.. if you haven`t visited the other dutch zoos, I´d go back to the Netherlands/Belgium. You could easily do Rotterdam Zoo, Safari Beekse Bergen and Antwerp in 3 days, Rotterdam and Beekse Bergen are among my all-time top favourites (together with Apenheul, but you`ve already seen that). Amersfoort and the dolphinarium Harderwijk aren`t far from Rotterdam neither, so there are many things to see zoo-wise.

Cologne combined with some of the zoos Toddy suggested would be nice too.

Or what about Basle/Zurich/Mulhouse?

Or Munich/Nuremberg/Augsburg? Munich and Nuremberg are great zoos, I havn`t seen Augsburg though. Munich is a fantastic city, too. Munich could also be combined with the Alpenzoo Insbruck and or the zoo in Salzburg.

More ideas: Leipzig/Dresden/Halle; Dresden/Prague/Usti nad Labem, Barcelona/ Bioparc Valencia/ Aquarium Valencia/ Tera Natura Benidorm, Hannover/Hagenbeck Hamburg/Osnabrück, or Leipzig/ Berlin Zoo/Berlin Tierpark!
